UNCG Softball Wins 3-1 to Sweep Series Against Elon

ELON, N.C.– The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team earned its third-straight win with a series sweep over Elon University with a score of 3-1 on Sunday at Hunt Softball Park.

UNCG improved to 12-7 with the win, sweeping Elon for the first time since the 2019 season, when the Spartans won with scores of 2-0, 8-0, and 4-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Spartans threatened immediately in the top of the first putting three runners on base, but the Phoenix got out of the jam with a foul out.

In the top of the third, Delaney Cumbie led off with a walk and advanced to second on a ground out. Jorde Chartrand came to the plate and crushed the first pitch she saw to right field for a two-run blast, 2-0.

Later that inning, Jessie Shipley doubled to left field and then Brooklynn Maxwell hit her own double bringing home Shipley for a 3-0 advantage.

Claudia Penny slugged her own home run as the leadoff batter in the bottom of the seventh cutting the deficit to two, 3-1. Carley Davis and Chloe Hatzopoulos were retired before Mauri Murray’s double to right center. Payton Swart fought at the plate but was eventually sat down on Chartrand’s third strikeout of the game holding on for the win.

NOTES
Chartrand hit her second home run of the season.
This was the Spartans’ 21st homer of the season.
Rhyann Jones tossed 5.0 innings, giving up one hit, one walk, and striking out a batter.
Chartrand went 2.0 innings giving up two hits, one earned run and striking out three.
Cumbie and Maxwell went 2-for-3 at the plate.

ON DECK

The Spartans continue its seven-game road trip traveling to Charleston, S.C. to face Charleston Southern on Wednesday, March 8 for a non-conference doubleheader. The first game is slated for 3 p.m.

UNCG then heads to Clemson, S.C. to compete in the Clemson Classic from Friday, March 10 to Sunday, March 12. The Spartans will take on the Clemson Tigers first on Friday. They will also play Jacksonville and Bryant at the tournament.
