UNCG Baseball Travels to Queens, Hosts Royals Saturday For Doubleheader

GREENSBORO, N.C – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball heads to Tuckaseegee Dream Fields on Friday to face Queens (Charlotte) for a single game and then host the Royals on Saturday for a doubleheader with the first game at noon.

Last Time Out
UNCG fell in tight battle against No. 19 NC State, 15-13.
Caleb Cozart hit the Spartans only home run of the game.
Cozart went a 2-for-4, with five RBIs and two runs.
Kennedy Jones (3-for-6), Zack Budzik (2-for-6) and Mitchell Smith (2-for-5) each had multi-hit games.
The Spartans tied the score three times before NC State took scored two runs for the win in the top of the ninth.

Scouting the Spartans
The Spartans were voted to finish third in the SoCon Preseason Coaches’ Poll.
UNCG is leading the conference in double plays (12) and double plays per game (0.92).
Nationally, the Spartans are 18th in double plays, 27th in sacrifice bunts (7), 40th in double plays per game, and 48th in doubles (28).
Zack Budzik is batting .368 (14-for-38) in 11 games played with three doubles and one triple.
Daniel Cerda is batting .341 (15-for-44) with 10 runs scored, five RBI, and one homerun.
In 20.0 innings pitched, Jay Miller leads the Spartan pitching staff with a 2.25 ERA, striking out 11 this season.
Six Spartans have two home runs each, including Dallas Callahan, Rowan Watt, Mitchell Smith, Kennedy Jones, Dosi Jonas, and Caleb Cozart.
Jonas leads the team with 12 out of the 77 RBIs this season.

Scouting the Royals
Queens is in their first year as a Division I program, joining the ASUN conference in fall of 2022.
The Royals start with an exciting schedule, playing 12 different conferences including North Carolina in the ACC, before starting play in ASUN.
Queens currently has a 3-9 record and has lost the last three games.
The Royals had a record number of six home runs against Tennessee Tech.
Dillon Lewis leads the Royals with 11 RBIs.
Lewis has four of the nine home runs for Queens.
Riley Cheek has a batting average of .319 going 15-for-47 in the 12 games played.
Tyler Cotto leads the Royals with a batting average of .417 in the four games he’s played.

Records
This will be the first time these two teams face each other in program history.

On Deck
UNCG hosts NC A&T for a mid-week game on Tuesday March 14, with a first pitch at 4 p.m.

Following the game against the Aggies, the Spartans host Big 12 foe West Virginia for a three-game series, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (March 17-19). Friday’s first pitch is slated for 4 p.m. at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
