UNCG Softball’s Ward Hits Walk Off in 10-2 Win Over Army

GREENSBORO, N.C.– The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team defeated Army West Point, 10-2, in five innings for its sixth run-rule win of the season to kick off the Spartan Classic on Friday afternoon at UNCG Softball Stadium.

This was the fourth game this season that the Spartans had 10 or more hits.

The Spartans improve to 15-12 overall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first inning, UNCG strung together four hits in the bottom of the second for a 5-0 advantage. With two outs and runners on first and second, Jaden Cheek’s RBI single to center field brought home Brooklynn Maxwell. Delaney Cumbie followed with a double to left center scoring two, 3-0.

On a full count, Jorde Chartrand singled to right field, scoring Cumbie from second. The Black Knights then walked Jessie Shipley with the bases loaded for the fifth run of the inning.

After a short rain delay, Army cut the deficit to three, 5-2, in the top of the fourth with a two-run home run to left field from Taylor Brown.

The Spartans mimicked their five-run inning from the second with a five-run offensive attack in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, UNCG had five-straight hits including a three-run home run from Blayke Batten to left center for an 8-2 lead. Cumbie connected for her second double of the game driving home Cheek from first, 9-2.

Maycin Brown walked and then on a 2-2 count, Salem Ward singled to center field bringing home Cumbie for the winning run, 10-2.

NOTES:

Cumbie went 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs scored, and one walk.
Maxwell also had a multi-hit game, swinging 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Cheek was the third Spartan with a multi-game hit, 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI.
Batten crushed her second home run of the season and 13th of her career.

The Spartans continue their Spartan Classic with Gardner-Webb in the first game of UNCG’s doubleheader tomorrow, March 18 with a start time of 1:30 p.m. at UNCG Softball Stadium. The Spartans then host Army once again for a game at 4 p.m.
