UNCG Softball’s Jones Named SoCon Pitcher of the Week
SoCon Announces Weekly Awards

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team saw freshman Rhyann Jones named Southern Conference (SoCon) Pitcher of the Week, announced on Monday. This is Jones’ first award and UNCG’s fourth weekly honor of the season.

Cumbie was named SoCon Player of the Week during the first week of competition on February 13 and then again on March 6. Redshirt sophomore Maddie Spell was named SoCon Pitcher of the Week on February 20.

Jones had three appearances with two starts last week. After a relief appearance against Notre Dame on Wednesday, the freshman from Daleville, Virginia, had two starts in the Spartan Classic over the weekend and surrendered zero runs. Jones threw five innings in a 9-0 shutout of Army on Saturday, giving up just three hits and striking out one batter.

The next day, Jones tossed four innings, gave up just two hits, and struck out four batters as UNCG defeated Gardner-Webb 5-3. For the week, Jones had a 1.85 ERA in 11 1/3 innings pitched.

In the SoCon, Jones is leading the way with six wins and no triples allowed, is third with 10 game starts, sixth with five sacrifice bunts allowed, seventh with two home runs allowed, and 10th with a 2.96 ERA and 47.1 innings tossed.

From Jones
“I’m excited and grateful to receive this award but I couldn’t have done it without my teammates who have supported me throughout the ups and downs of the season. We played tremendous defense this weekend and the run support of our offense made my job a lot easier. I’m excited to see us carry this momentum into conference play this weekend and the rest of the season!”
