Pride split with Averett after extra inning win in Game Two

Danville, VA – The Greensboro College Softball team was back in Virginia to face another ODAC member and former conference rival, Averett University in an afternoon doubleheader. Both games were very competitive and came down to the last plays as the Pride would split with the Cougars, falling in game one, 2-1, but coming back in game two to win in extra innings, 11-9.

Game One

Senior Kassie Simmons (Gibsonville, NC), this week’s USA South Pitcher of the Week, took the mound to start the day for Greensboro. Averett was able to take an early lead in the bottom of the first inning, but Sophomore Madison Dillner (Leicester, NC) tied the game when she hit a RBI single to score Junior Ivy Ray (Thomasville, NC) in the fifth inning. However, the Cougars had an answer to jump back out in front, 2-1 and unfortunately, the Pride was unable to get anymore offense going and would ultimately fall to Averett, 2-1
Greensboro was led by Sophomore Kelsey Craven (Ramseur, NC) who finished 2-3 with a double, while Dillner added an RBI and Ray was 1-3 with a run.

Game Two

Junior Alexis Sox (Burlington, NC) put the Pride on the scoreboard first as she advanced home on a Cougars’ wild pitch and then Ray scored on an RBI from Senior Olivia Davidson (Crofton, MD) to end the inning with the lead, 2-0. A few innings later, Averett would score four straight runs to grab their first advantage of the game but Greensboro trimmed it to one run after Sox scored on a sacrifice fly by Senior Brooke Kinley (Lexington, NC). The Cougars continued to have an answer but in the top of the seventh inning, Craven hit a triple up the middle to score Simmons and then Craven eventually scored after Sox drove her in after hitting a single to tie the game at 5-5. The game would go into extra innings and after a big rally in the top of the 11th, The Pride came a away with the win, 11-9.
Greensboro was led by Sox, who dominated at the plate, finishing 5-6, with 2 RBI’s, 2 doubles and 3 runs, while Senior Kailey Walker (Eden, NC) added 3 RBI’s. In addition, Lauren Engel (Huntersville, NC) pitched the complete game, striking out six batters, to earn the win.

The Pride will return to action on Saturday, March 25th as they host Roanoke College in a doubleheader at Barber Park. First Pitch is scheduled for 1:00pm.
