UNCG Softball Sweeps ETSU With a 9-0 Shutout

GREENSBORO, N.C.– The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team extended its win streak to eight games with a 9-0 shutout against Southern Conference (SoCon) foe ETSU sweeping the series against the Bucs.

Five of the eight games have been run-rule victories. This was the sixth shutout and 10th run-rule of the season.

The eight-game win streak is the first this season and the longest streak since the Spartans won nine games last season between March 20 and April 3.

The Spartans improve to 22-12 overall and 3-0 in the SoCon.

Four of the nine runs came from a grand slam from Blayke Batten in the bottom of the second. This was the fourth grand slam of the season for the Spartans.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UNCG’s defense was active early and often retiring three-straight batters in the top of the first.

UNCG then quickly loaded the bases in the bottom of the first with the first run off a walk. Blayke Batten then singled to right field advancing the runners for a 2-0 lead, while Maycin Brown followed with a sacrifice fly to center field extending the lead to 3-0.

Brooklynn Maxwell retired three-straight batters with groundouts to third base in the top of the second. The Spartans then scored five runs on three hits in the bottom of the frame, including a grand slam from Batten and a solo home run from Brown.

The Bucs saw its second and third base runners in the third, but the side was retired with a strikeout. UNCG squeezed in one more run in the bottom of the inning with Maxwell’s second triple of the season, scoring Delaney Cumbie from first for a 9-0 lead.

NOTES:

Batten went 2-for-3 with five RBI and her fourth home run of the season.
Brown went 1-for-2 with one run and two RBI.
Maxwell and Jessie Shipley each had a RBI.
Jorde Chartrand tossed her fourth complete game of the season, earning her fifth win of the season striking out four batters.

The Spartans hit the road for the first time since March 11, as they travel to face the Charlotte 49ers on Wednesday, March 29 with a first pitch slated for 5:00 p.m.
