UNCG’s Spell Named SoCon Pitcher of the Week for Second Time

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team saw redshirt sophomore Maddie Spell named Southern Conference (SoCon) softball Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season, as announced by the conference Monday.

Spell earned her first honor from the SoCon on February 20 when she won both games that she appeared in during the Spiro Classic. She pitched a complete game with a career-best seven strikeouts in an 8-0 win over Morehead State and tossed another complete game striking out two batters, allowing one unearned run in a 9-1 victory over UNC Wilmington.

So far this season, Delaney Cumbie has been named SoCon Player of the Week twice, Spell has earned SoCon Pitcher of the Week twice, and Rhyann Jones was voted Pitcher of the Week two weeks ago.

UNCG’s Spell started and threw a complete game in the Spartans’ lone game last week. The Lawrenceville, Georgia, native had four strikeouts, giving up just three hits and one earned run as UNCG defeated Charlotte, ranked 30th in the RPI, 4-2, on Wednesday.

Among the SoCon, Spell is fifth with seven doubles allowed, sixth with a 2.86 ERA and 14 walks allowed, fourth with six wins and 11 games started, eighth with 66.0 innings pitched, ninth with 11 strikeouts, and 10th with one triple allowed.

From Spell

“The win against Charlotte was another great win for the team and to receive this award makes it more special! Both our offense and defense were strong until the very end, which made my job easier. I’m looking forward to the competition this week, especially our conference series against Furman!”
