UNCG Baseball Falls In a Tough Battle Against The Citadel

Greensboro, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team fell in a tough battle against The Citadel, 5-3, on Saturday afternoon at the UNCG Baseball Stadium in Southern Conference (SoCon) play.

Dallas Callahan hit his fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh for his only hit of the day, which brought the Spartan’s deficit to one run, 4-3.

How it happened

The Citadel began the game with a two-run first inning. The Bulldogs’ leadoff batter, Sawyer Reeves hit a home run for a 1-0 advantage. Their second run of the game came from a RBI single to left field from Crosby Jones, 2-0.

With Kennedy Jones on second base, Mitchell Smith hit a single through the left side to bring his teammate in, making the score 2-1.

Both teams went scoreless in the second and third innings before the Bulldogs added a run after Reeves’s ground out to first base scoring Travis Elliott from third, 3-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, Jones countered the Bulldogs’ run with a RBI double to right center bringing home Jeremy Wolf from first base, to cut the deficit to one, 3-2.

The Citadel added a run in the top of the seventh with another RBI single from Crosby Jones, 4-2, and then again in the top of the ninth from Noah Mitchell’s RBI single to right sealing its win, 5-3 score.

On Deck

The Spartans finish the three-game series against The Citadel on Sunday, April 16th with a first pitch of 1 p.m.

Gardner-Webb heads to UNCG for a non-conference game on Tuesday, April 18th, with a first pitch now at 5 p.m. The first 50 students will get free pizza courtesy of UNCG Activities and Campus Events and will be a Bark in the Park event sponsored by All Pets Considered.
