UNCG Baseball Drops Series Opener to Mercer, 10-3

MACON, Ga.– The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team was unable to get past Mercer in the series opener Friday evening, as the Bears won 10-3 in Southern Conference (SoCon) play at OrthoGeorgia Park.

Mitchell Smith hit his fourth home run of the season and seventh homer of his career, while Dosi Jonas continues to lead the team after tallying his 13th home run of the season and 15th of his career.

UNCG is now 18-24 overall and 5-8 in the SoCon, while Mercer is 27-16 overall and 9-4 in the conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer had its first of three multi-run innings in the bottom of the first. Eric Toth hit an RBI double scoring Treyson Hughes and then Jozef Rohrbacher singled to score Toth from second for a 2-0 lead.

The Spartans cut the deficit to one, 2-1, with Smith’s solo home run to left field with one out in the top of the second.

The Bears scored four runs on two hits in the bottom of the third to break the game open, 6-1. One of the four hits included a Carter Sanford grand slam to center field.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Dallas Callahan tallied his fifth double of the season in the top of the fifth, to lead off the frame. Kennedy Jones then reached on an error, but Callahan was able to score, 6-2.

Mercer added four runs between the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to extend its advantage to eight, 10-2. Ty Dalley homered in the sixth, while Toth hit a two-run home run in the seventh.

With one last chance at the plate, the Spartans saw Jonas crush the ball over the left field wall in the ninth, before Mercer retired the next three batters to hold on to the 10-3 win.

NOTES:

Jonas went 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI.
GC Jarman also went 2-for-4 at the plate.
Smith hit 1-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI.
Callahan went 1-for-3 with one run scored.
On the mound, Julien Peissel had a career-best four strikeouts.
