UNCG Softball Blanks Western Carolina, 6-0, for 10th Shut Out

GREENSBORO, N.C.– The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team earned its 10th shutout of the season behind a 6-0 victory over Western Carolina on Sunday afternoon at UNCG Softball Stadium in the final regular season Southern Conference (SoCon) game of the season.

UNCG is now 34-20 overall and 13-4 in the SoCon, while Western Carolina is 20-24 and 8-10 in the conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Brooklynn Maxwell led off with a walk in the bottom of the first and moved over to third on Delaney Cumbie’s sacrifice bunt. With runners in scoring position, Maycin Brown flew out to center field scoring Maxwell from third on a sacrifice fly and a 1-0 lead.

In the circle, Maddie Spell retired eight-straight, including three strikeouts through the top of the third. Western Carolina’s first hit of the game came in that frame.

UNCG added three runs to its score on three hits in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Grace Loftin singled and Brown walked before Jessie Shipley sent a long ball over the left field wall for her 10th homer of the season, giving the Spartans a 4-0 lead.

Jaden Cheek led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo shot down the left field line, extending the score 5-0. This was her fourth homer of the season.

The Spartans were able to add one more run in the bottom of the fifth for a 6-0 score. With one out, Shipley reached on an error and Samantha Lagrama reached on a fielder’s choice. Ashley Gontram then singled to center field and Shipley was able to cross home after a misplay in center field.

Jorde Chartrand got out of a bases-loaded jam in the circle in the top of the seventh as Western Carolina saw three of its seven base runners in the game in the frame.

NOTES:

Lagrama hit her 100th-career hit in the bottom of the third.
UNCG’s eight hits were spread across eight different batters.
Shipley went 1-for-2 with two runs scored, two RBI, and one walk.
Brown and Cheek drove in one RBI each.
Spell, Salem Ward, and Chartrand combined for three hits allowed, five strikeouts, and no earned runs.

ON DECK

UNCG awaits its opponent in the 2023 SoCon Tournament which will take place from Wednesday, May 10 to Saturday, May 13 in Chattanooga, Tennessee at Frost Stadium.

Since the Spartans won the regular season title and are the number one seed, UNCG received the bye and will play its first game on Thursday, May 11.
