Bryan Gonzalez barrels two-run double to walk it off for Drive
from www.milb.com/greenville

The Greenville Drive (36-27) have found a knack for the comeback, this time plating two in the bottom of the ninth off a Bryan Gonzalez two-run double to left field gap, giving the Drive a 6-5 victory Sunday and a series clinching victory over the Greensboro Grasshoppers (33-28).

Gonzalez barreled up a 1-2 count breaking ball over the heart of the plate, rifling the ball into the gap, plating both Karson Sima and Roman Anthony. The play would mean redemption for Gonzalez who struck out swinging with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to end the Drive’s rally.

Gonzalez’s knock kept the Drive in first place in South Atlantic League South Division as the Winston-Salem Dash dispatched the Asheville Tourists, 6-5. The Drive remain a half-game up on the Dash.

The momentum swung the Grasshoppers’ way early Sunday afternoon, as they took an early 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third thanks to a ground out that scored one, a Tsung-Che Cheng homer, and a pair of RBI-singles from Jase Bowen and Wyatt Hendrie.

Greenville responded in the bottom half of the third, however, thanks to a two-out single from Alex Erro and a two-out double from Simas to put runners on the second and third for Anthony. Anthony drove a hard liner to the left field gap bringing both runners home to cut the lead to 4-2.

Angel Bastardo worked a 1-2-2 fourth for the Drive, keeping the momentum with Greenville. Tyler Miller capitalized on the momentum, sending a 110-mph ball over the right field wall to cut the lead to just a run at 4-3.

Bastardo finished the night after the conclusion of the fifth, ultimately allowing four tuns on six hits, two walks while picking up five strikeouts. He’d be relieved by Casey Cobb.

Blaze Jordan, riding a two-home run performance to this point in the series, barreled up a 408-ft bomb over the left field wall to knot the game at 4-4. It’d mark his third of the series and 10th of the year.

But the Grasshoppers weren’t content with folding as they scratched across one more run in the seventh as Mike Jarvis tripled into left field scoring Tres Gonzalez to regain the lead at 5-4.

Newcomer Brock Bell kept the deficit steady in the eighth and ninth for the Drive, allowing for the Drive to play heroes again for the second time in a week. Simas reached after being hit in the foot by a pitch, Anthony walked, and a wild pitch moved both runners up 90 feet. A Bonaci strikeout gave way to an intentional walk to the red-hot Jordan setting up Gonzalez for the walk-off opportunity.

Gonzalez would not miss, sending the Drive to their third straight victory and fifth series victory in a row.

The Drive (Boston Red Sox) return to action Tuesday in Bowling Green at 7:35 p.m. to take on the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Tampa Bay Rays) for a six-game series. The conclusion of the third game in Bowling Green on June 22 marks the half-way point of the 2023 season. Should the SAL South Division standings remain unchanged at the conclusion of the game, the Drive will clinch a spot in the SAL postseason playoffs and be crowned the SAL South First-Half Champions.
