Cade Beloso’s 3-run HR lifts LSU baseball past Wake Forest at 2023 College World Series

from Koki Riley, with the Lafayette Daily Advertiser, out of Lafayette, Louisiana, and Koki was the first to post up the game report from tonight’s Wake Forest-LSU game at the College Baseball World Series, at Omaha, Nebraska…

OMAHA, Neb. — The Creole Bombineaux.

It’s the nickname that belongs to Cade Beloso, LSU baseball’s veteran slugger who missed almost the entire 2022 season with a torn ACL and meniscus. It’s been a long road for Beloso, but perhaps it was always supposed to lead him to Omaha and the 2023 College World Series.

Already trailing 2-1 to Wake Forest, LSU needed something big from its offense in the third inning on Wednesday, as Beloso came up to the plate with the bases loaded and one out.

First, LSU tied the game on a wild pitch from Wake Forest starter Seth Keener. But then, on a 2-0 count, Beloso finally got a pitch he liked and took advantage, cracking a three-run home run over the right-field wall.

The big blast handed LSU a 5-2 lead, and the Tigers never looked back from there, defeating Wake Forest by the same score to keep their season alive.

LSU (51-16) will face Wake Forest (54-11) again in a do-or-die matchup scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday and set to be broadcast on ESPN2. The winner will move on to the College World Series final and face Florida beginning on Friday.

LSU baseball: Griffin Herring provides critical relief
LSU needed Griffin Herring to step up Wednesday.

With LSU down 2-0 and Wake Forest threatening to score with runners on the corners and two out in the second inning, Herring entered the game in a precarious spot. But he escaped the jam by striking out first baseman Nick Kurtz and then never looked back.

He wound up pitching 4? innings, allowing no runs and just three hits while striking out six Demon Deacons. His performance allowed LSU’s offense to take the lead in the fourth and provide extra rest for the bullpen.

LSU Tigers baseball: The Javen Coleman experiment
LSU coach Jay Johnson rolled the dice on Wednesday by starting Javen Coleman, who hadn’t pitched since May. He had started three games but entered the day with a 6.75 ERA.

Coleman got through the first inning without any major hiccups, but struggled in the second. He allowed a single and walked a pair of batters, leaving the game with the bases loaded and one out for Blake Money.

Money then allowed a single that scored two runs, giving Wake Forest an early 2-0 lead. Both runs were charged to Coleman and his ERA spiked to 7.07.
