Final from Wednesday afternoon at First National Bank Field:
Greensboro Grasshoppers 11, Winston-Salem Dash 2
WP:J.P. Massey(1-0)/LP:Andrew Dalquist(1-6)
Hoppers-11-8-2 Dash- 2-6-2
Greensboro Grasshoppers(35-28)
Winston-Salem Dash(34-28)
It was a Wet, light rain falling at times during this afternoon game, and at times the fans had to raise their umbrellas or take cover, then you had the Wind, it was like we were in “Little Chicago”, as Greensboro was a very ‘Windy City’, and the game was Wild, as in the context of the Grasshoppers taking the early 3-0 lead, with Jase Bowen homering again, as he connected in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run shot to left field, and now Bowen sits at 13 HR’s and 52 RBI for the season, and the season will just be hitting the halfway point tomorrow/Thursday…
Then you had Maikol Escotto, arguably the Hoppers’ hottest Long Ball hitter this week, with Escotto going yard for the second game in a-row….Grand Slam last night(Tuesday), and then Escotto stayed hotto with a three-run homer this afternoon…Seven RBI on homers over the past two games, and that’s the way we like, Uh-huh…..
Mike Jarvis was still popping at the plate as he plated three more RBI, with a single and a Big Triple…No lack of run production from the Greensboro Grasshoppers in this contest, 21 runs over the past two games for the Greensboro bunch…(Jarvis now with 37 RBI for the 2023 season.)
New Greensboro Grasshoppers’ pitcher J.P. Massey was in town for his first game on the mound, at First National Bank Field…Massey amassed five innings of work on the hill, and he threw shutout baseball over his five frames, allowing zilch runs on just three hits, with 3 BB’s and 4 K’s….Massey got in several jams, he even walked the based loaded in the fourth inning, but he limited the damage from the WS Dash, and got through his in-game struggles to become a better pitcher than he was, when arrived from the Bradenton Marauders…
Another Hopper that we tagged with our Steak n Shake Player of the Game honors was Eli Wilson…The Hoppers’ catcher was 1-3/Double/BB/Run/SB, but that is just part of the story that Eli Wilson wrote on this Wet and Windy Wild Wednesday Win, at FNB Field…The true value of Eli Wilson on this Wednesday was his work behind the plate, catching newcomer J.P. Massey…To me Wilson’s defensive value can not totally be measured in any analytical numbers…It was his presence back there as Massey’s catcher…Wilson was the backstop, he was working hand-in-hand and side-by-side Massey…A brand new pitcher in the Hoppers’ starting rotation today, and there was Wilson, carrying his new teammate on his back at times, and making sure Massey made it through his stint, and lifting up Massey and driving him on and beyond all of those 3-2 counts, and pushing Massey to get key strikeouts to close out the fourth and fifth innings, and in the fourth, the WS Dash had the bases juiced/loaded/FOD(Full of Dash), but, the Dash failed to score vs. Massey(and Wilson)…Nobody out there knew what was coming, but Massey and Wilson….They knew what pitches were coming next, and worked their battery-mate plan out to perfection…..
Steak n Shake POG/Players of the Game, for Escotto, Bowen, Jarvis, Massey, and Wilson on this day….
For the afternoon Greensboro batters collected eight hits with Escotto leading the way going 2-4/HR/Bunt Single/3 RBI…You always have to looking for a Bloop, a Bleeder, a Bunt and a Blast, and the Grasshoppers got most of those over the past two ball games…Also on Wednesday we saw Mike Jarvis almost even with Escotto in the Power Plant, with Jarvis 2-4/Triple/2 Runs/3 RBI/SB…And there you go, those two Hoppers produced half of the Hoppers hits…Jase Bowen was going 1-3/HR/SAC Fly/3 RBI, plus Bowen struck out during one of his at-bats and the Dash catcher Ivan Gonzalez lost the ball, so Bowen was going fast and furious to first base, and Gonzalez throws down to first in an attempt to get Bowen, but the ball hits Bowen in the back, and with the ball lose, Bowen chugs on in to second base…It was one of those Wild Wednesdays at FNB Field…We gave you Eli Wilson’s numbers earlier, and with his key double, and the other hits we have already listed, that now covers six of the Grasshoppers eight base hits…Tsung-Che Cheng went 1-3/BB/Run and he continues to lead the Hopper batters in average at right around .304…Hit number eight/ocho of the day goes to big Will Matthiessen who was 1-4/Run/RBI…
We gave you the story on the new Hoppers’ pitcher J.P. Massey and Massey got relief help after his five frames of work, with Mitchell Miller, Santiago Florez, Yunior Thibo, and Eddy Yean all towing the rubber, as they came in from the Hoppers pen…The WS Dash snagged two runs off of reliever Miller in the seventh inning, with Wilfred Veras driving in Terrell Tatum and Loidel Chapelli, with Veras double to left field allowing Tatum and Chapelli to come home…Veras fly ball got down in left-center field, after a gallant effort by Jase Bowen to come up with ball…As they say in business of ball, “nothing ventured nothing gained”, and the Greensboro guys saw the shutout go by the wayside, but the Hoppers with responded with four more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, during their last at-bats, to increase the score up from 7-2, to the final of 11-2…
Hoppers Win, Hoppers Win, Hoppers Win, Hoppers Win Again…
Could be wrong, but that pretty much breaks it all down for the Greensboro Bunch, on this Wednesday, with the “Wet and Windy Wild Wednesday Win”, at FNB Field…

Dash Fall in Greensboro, 11-2
Veras notches multi-RBI outing in loss
GREENSBORO, NC – The Winston-Salem Dash dropped game two of the ‘Battle of I-40’ against the Greensboro Grasshoppers, 11-2, Wednesday afternoon at First National Bank Field.
Greensboro (35-28) built a lead early in the bottom of the first. Mike Jarvis opened the scoring on an RBI single before Jase Bowen smacked a two-run homer giving the Grasshoppers a 3-0 lead after one.
Winston-Salem (34-28) was stymied at the plate against Greensboro starter J.P. Massey. The right hander allowed only three hits across five innings.
After allowing the three runs in the first, Winston-Salem starter Andrew Dalquist settled down. The Redondo Beach, California native threw up zeros across the next three innings, before the Grasshoppers got to him in the fifth. Greensboro tagged Dalquist for three more runs, capped off by a Jarvis two-RBI triple making it 6-0. The home side tacked on one more run in the inning against Kade Mechals, taking a 7-0 lead into the sixth.
Trailing 7-0, Winston-Salem did not go down quietly. Following a single and a hit-by-pitch, Wilfred Veras cut into the deficit, lacing his league-leading 22nd double driving in a pair, and the Dash only trailed by five, 7-2.
That was all Winston-Salem could muster against Greensboro pitching. The Grasshoppers added another four runs in the eighth and went on to take game two, 11-2.
Massey picked up his first win of the season going five innings while Dalquist was tabbed with the loss.
The Dash and Grasshoppers meet again on Thursday for game three. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. from First National Bank Field.
