Former Grimsley HS and Page HS volleyball coach Glenn Cashion taking his game to Texas:Cashion pulling up stakes/steaks for the Longhorn State

Was heading down Gracewood Drive on the Saturday afternoon walk today, and ran into Glenn Cashion, the former high school volleyball coach at both Page and Grimsley High Schools…Glenn was putting in the time coaching a lot of volleyball back in day, coaching the Pirates and the Whirlies, and also coaching many club volleyball and even several sand volleyball teams…

For many, at one time he was considered one the top volleyball coaches on the high school level in our state, along with Darlene Joyner(Northwest Guilford HS) and others…I still remember coaching high school volleyball for a season myself on the high school level way back in the day, and my varsity team was good, say maybe like (14-10) and my JV team ran out to an (8-0) record, before our world came crashing down, and we finished at (8-4)…

So, you can see, I have seen a few of those volleyball days myself, but Glenn Cashion was one of the Deans of the Bump, Set, and Spike/Kill, when he was leading his volleyball teams to much success…

On the Grimsley-Page volleyball games, and for the same token, the Page-Grimsley volleyball games, depending on if Glenn was coaching at Page, or coaching at Grimsley at the time, Cashion said:

`Oh, it’s going to go to the wire’….’The girls know they have to play their very best.’

It was a super season for Glenn Cashion at Page a few years back, when the Pirates were (5-1 Metro 4-A, 15-4 overall), with Northwest Guilford and Grimley giving Page and Coach Cash, their stiffest competition at that time…

Glenn Cashion, was a longtime Junior Olympics coach with the Piedmont Volleyball Club, and he always stressed the need for more volleyball athletes to be playing Junior Olympic volleyball, as well as the time they would spend on their high school volleyball circuit.

We saw Coach Cash today, and he told me he was cashing in his chips, and that the Glenn Cashion was taking the show to Texas…

There were just a few minutes to talk to Glenn Cashion, and had time to wish him good luck on the road, to the Longhorn State, where they say you can get a pretty good Longhorn Steak…

But, like we are saying Coach Cashion/Coach Cash, is pulling up stakes, and he will be gone soon, for the Great State of Texas…

The Cashion name is like Hot Butter in this town…You had Glenn with the success he showed as a Volleyball Coach, and his teams used to play with poise and finesse, plus Glenn’s teams had volleyball smarts…They did not try and overpower you and destroy you, they were more like Tumblebees gymnasts playing volleyball, yes smoothe, very smoothe…

Yes sir, Glenn Cashion was like the Hot Butter in town, and then you had his dad, Sonny Cashion…Sonny Cashion was almost like a brand in this town…Sonny had many different businesses, and he had a baseball batting center on East Wendover Avenue at one time, and I think they called it the All-American Sports Center…Sonny had his Sonny’s Funnies Semi-Pro baseball team that he ran for many years…Lots of baseball talent came through there with Sonny’s baseball clubs…And Sonny’s guys used to faceoff, meet and beat The Pond Giants, Roxboro, Raleigh, Greenville and other area teams over the Summers of the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s….Our old friend Cliff Craven played for Sonny a few times over the years, and good friend Tommy Waynick also met the wrath of Sonny’s Funnies a few times…When you think of the name Sonny, you may remember the country musician Sonny James, or the BBQ man at Sonny’s BBQ in Charlotte, or even Sonny Newsome, the big tall burly basketball player from over around Smith HS a few years back, or maybe even Sonny Drysdale, the son of the banker, Milburn Drysdale on the Beverly Hillbillies Show back in the day, but the real brand of Greensboro, N.C., was Sonny Cashion…He was the Hot Butter in this town…

Plus you have Glenn Cashion’s mom Kay Cashion, who has been known for her work at Cashion’s Home Furnishings and Interiors for many years(36 years), but she is now best known these days as Kay Cashion, our Guilford County Commissioner….Kay Cashion has been on the Guilford County Board of Commissioners for 20 years and she is Hot Butter in this town…Kay had a close call back in the Spring primary of May, in 2022, but she knocked off her challenger, Greg Drumwright, with Kay picking up 53.3% of the democratic vote, to Drumwright’s 46.7% of the vote…Kay Cashion is, Sonny Cashion was, and Glenn Cashion always will be considered Hot Butter in this town…

Saw Glenn maybe for the last time today, and he thanked me for giving him some real good coverage over the years, here at GreensboroSports.com…The road he was traveling down, Gracewood Drive, has seen its share of good leaders come driving along that street, like Ethan Albright, Addison Edwards, Robert Stutts, our Forbis and Dick Funeral Services man, and Joe Spinks….But none more important than the Swan Song that Glenn Cashion was moving down that Gracewood Drive/street to today…Hot Butter moving on through and out, on a Hot Summer Day in July, and we never know why we have to say Goodbye, but we do….

Good Luck Glenn Cashion, as you take your game to Texas…Give me a T for Texas, Give me a T for Tennessee, give me a T for Thelma, woman made a fool out of me…And it wasn’t all that tough/hard…And I never really knew any women named Thelma, other than Thelma who was JJ’s sister on the Good Times TV Show, and Thelma, who was part of Dawn, in that musical group of Tony Orlando and Dawn…Plus there was Thelma in the movie, Thelma and Louise…But, that is all beside the point…

The point is, Good Luck Glenn Cashion, as you head off to Texas……
(And thanks for the Memories coming in from, “The House of Cashion”.)
