The Browns have high expectations for the 2023 season with most of their success likely revolving around the play of QB Deshaun Watson. If he returns to form, he may just break a 43-year-old record.
The last time a Cleveland quarterback threw for 4,000+ yards in a season was in 1980. That player was Brian Sipe, and he was named the NFL’s MVP after passing for 4,132 yards.
Watson may just reach the feat this season because the last time he played a full season, he threw for a league-leading 4,823 yards.
The 27-year-old looked far from a franchise quarterback in 2022. He went 3-3 after returning from an NFL suspension and threw for 1,102 yards, seven touchdowns and five interceptions.
However, with a full offseason to knock off the rest of his rust and the Browns adding more weapons to his arsenal in the form of wide receivers Elijah Moore and Cedric Tillman, Watson is certainly set up for success.
Cleveland signed Watson to a five-year, $230M fully guaranteed contract last offseason. He is being paid as one of the best quarterbacks in the league, so he must now play like one.
If he doesn’t, the Browns will start to regret their all-in decision on the controversial quarterback. But if Watson meets the expectations, the 2023 season could be a historic one for Watson and Cleveland.
