Best effort of the season by the Hoppers’ starting pitcher, Thomas Harrington…This marked his first Greensboro win of the season(1-3), and he went 7 innings, giving up 1 Run, on 4 hits, with 0 BB’s, and a huge 11 K’s…Harrington a Steak n Shake Player of the Game of the Game, along with Tres Gonzalez, who had a three-run homer to right, and it gave the Hoppers a three-to-zero lead, and the Hoppers never trailed after that long ball from Gonzo…Jase Bowen also got it going with a solo HR to right, and it was his 19th HR of the year, and ran his league-leading RBI total to 71…Only three Hopper hits on the night, with Gonzales and Bowen cashing in on two of those…

Tres Gonzalez and Jase Bowen scored two of those four Hoppers runs, while Shawn Ross and Nick Cimillo also scored for the Grasshoppers…Cimillo came up with that third Hopper hit…

From Asheville, their starting pitcher, Valente Bellozo, was also a rock, out there on the mound…He went for five innings, allowing 0 Runs, on 0 Hits, with 0 BB’s, and 6 K’s…A no-hitter/perfect game going while Bellozo was out there, and between Harrington and Bellozo, this might have been the best pitchers’ duel in the SALLY League, in 2023…It was ‘Lights Out’, while Harrington and Bellozo were on the hill…

The pitching staff for the Greensboro Grasshoppers struck out a whopping 16 Asheville Tourist batters, and Hopper pitchers onlyh gave up three walks to the Tourists, on the night…Hopper pitchers included the winner Harrington, Ryan Harbin, Jake Stevenson, and the closer/finisher Cy Nielson…

For Asheville, the Tourists got key hits from Tommy Sacco, who homered(solo), and from Zach Cole, who came up with an RBI Triple…At the top of their batting order, Jacob Melton went 2-5 for the Tourists, and he scored one Asheville run…

Bellozo Perfect, and Limited, in 4-2 Loss
Tourists Fight Hard in Greensboro
from Doug Maurer at www.milb.com/ashevilletourists

GREENSBORO– The Greensboro Grasshoppers handed the Asheville Tourists a bit of revenge for Asheville’s six-game sweep of Greensboro back in May. The ‘Hoppers defended their home field to take Game One of the current series by a final score of 4-2.

The Grasshoppers were very fortunate that Asheville decided to limit their starting pitcher, Valente Bellozo, in both innings pitched and number of pitches. Bellozo turned in the best starting pitching performance by a Tourists pitcher since April 20, 2022 when Adrian Chaidez went 18 up, 18 down at Jersey Shore.

Bellozo retired all 15 batters he faced and needed a miniscule 55 pitches to do so. The right-hander was more than halfway to a perfect game but Bellozo was not given the go-ahead to come back out in the sixth. The 55 pitches thrown is the fewest number of pitches Bellozo has thrown in a game all year, as either a starter or a reliever.

Greensboro took advantage when Bellozo did not come back out to pitch. The Grasshoppers hit a three-run Home Run to break a scoreless tie then added a solo Home Run in the seventh. The home team nearly had another two-run Home Run in the seventh but Jacob Melton climbed the centerfield wall to bring it back for an out.

Asheville hung tough. Tommy Sacco Jr. hit a solo Home Run and Zach Cole clubbed a two-out RBI triple in the eighth. The Tourists trailed 4-2 entering the ninth and Asheville loaded the bases with one out. A strikeout followed by a fly out ended the game.

The Tourists will attempt to bounce back with a quick turnaround. Wednesday’s afternoon contest is slated for 12:00pm ET.
