United Soccer Coaches Preseason Top 25 rankings

GREENSBORO, N.C.?– The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men’s soccer team enters the 2023 season as the No. 10 team in the country, as United Soccer Coaches released its preseason rankings on Tuesday.

UNCG concluded the 2022 season ranked No. 5 nationally, its highest ranking in program history. The previous highest ranking was No. 9 in 2004.

UNCG won the 2022 Southern Conference (SoCon) Regular Season title and Tournament Championship to prove the SoCon Preseason poll to be correct after the team was picked to finish on top. The squad earned the program’s 10th Division I bid into the NCAA Tournament and 19th in program history, earning a bye and the right to host the second round of the NCAA Tournament. UNCG played then-ranked No. 13 Indiana in the quarterfinal round, for the best finish in the Spartans’ Division I era and best finish since the department was Division II and was a runner-up in 1989.

The Spartans received 111 points. Defending 2022 NCAA Champion, Syracuse, led the way with 188 points after taking the title behind an 18-2-5 overall record. Indiana, who fell to the Orange, earned the No. 2 spot with 180 points, while the University of Kentucky totaled 172 points, good for third in the poll.

UNCG was sandwiched between ACC foe Clemson who totaled 113 points, good for ninth in the nation, and Marshall, who received 109 points, was voted to finish 11th.

The Spartans added 10 freshmen and three transfer student-athletes adding to their 16 returning from last year’s roster.

UNCG is set to open the 2023 season with three exhibitions, including traveling to James Madison (Aug. 11) and USC Upstate (Aug. 15). The Spartans host Radford on Friday, August 18 at 7:00 p.m. for a home exhibition, before welcoming California Berkeley to UNCG Soccer Stadium for UNCG’s home opener on Thursday, August 24 and 7:00 p.m.
