United Soccer Coaches Announce 2023 NCAA Division I Players to Watch – Defenders
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior Emmanuel Hagan of UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men’s soccer team was named to the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Defender Watch List as released by the organization on Tuesday.
The Accra, Ghana native was among 24 defenders selected for the list.
Hagan has been a key defender for the Spartans for three years, playing in 49 games over his collegiate career thus far. He has scored three goals and tallied three assists for nine total points in his three seasons with the Blue & Gold. Two of his goals came last year against Coastal Carolina where UNCG won 5-1 and in a 6-3 victory over Furman. He also chipped in an assist last season in a 5-1 win over High Point.
Last season, the center back assisted UNCG to 0.89 goals against average, which was ranked 22nd in the nation. The Spartans let up just 19 goals last season, but scored 46, which was ranked ninth in the nation.
The Spartans concluded the 2022 season with a No. 5 ranking from the United Soccer Coaches in the final poll of the year after winning the 2022 Southern Conference (SoCon) regular season and tournament titles. The Blue & Gold went on to earn the program’s 10th Division I bid to the NCAA Tournament and 19th in program history, earning a bye and the right to host the second round of the tournament.
To begin the 2023 season, UNCG received a No. 10 preseason ranking from the United Soccer Coaches and was the highest ranked non-Power 5 school in the country.
UNCG is set to open the 2023 season with three exhibitions, including traveling to James Madison (Aug. 11) and USC Upstate (Aug. 15). The Spartans host Radford on Friday, August 18 at 7:00 p.m. for a home exhibition, before welcoming California Berkeley to UNCG Soccer Stadium for UNCG’s home opener on Thursday, August 24 at 7:00 p.m.
