Talking this morning with new Southern Guilford Storm head football coach Rodney Boykin, down at Southern Guilford HS…We talked about Coach Boykin getting to Southern Guilford late this Summer, but he said SG assistant coach Preston Jones had been keeping the Storm working until he(Cocach Boykin) arrived on the scene..Preston Jones is a graduate of Souther Guilford HS, and coach Jones played college football at Alabama, for the Crimson Tide, and coach Nick Saban…(An Alabama football player from right here in Guilford County, of all places.)
Coach Boykin is the cousin of the Ragsdale Tigers head football coach, Johnny Boykin, and Coach Rodney Boykin was an assistant coach for Doug Roberston down at Eastern Guilford, he was an assistant for Coach Baker up at Rockingham County HS, and he was an assistant coach last season for Coach Anthony Timmons with the Western Guilford Hornets…
Coach Rodney Boykin has football connections all over the map, and he coached Dominque Graves and Bryant Barr, back when both were the rotating QB’s for the Eastern Guilford Wilcats, and he keeps up with his former players, even today…Barr, now an assistant coach for Kennedy Tinsley, and the Mallard Creek Mavericks; and Graves, now a photographer out in San Francisco, California….
Rodney Boykin says this will be a big-time rebuilding year for the SG Storm, and that this group of Storm football players are going to be real good in just a few years down the road…He sees great things in the future for this SG Storm football program…
Tonight Southern Guilford will be in a football jamboree down at Jordan Matthews High School, in Siler City, and then next Friday night, the SG Storm will open up their regular season against the Southeast Guilford Falcons, at C.K. Siler Stadium….
