SoCon Announces Men’s Soccer Preseason Predictions

GREENSBORO, N.C. – After taking home the 2022 Southern Conference (SoCon) Regular Season and Tournament titles, as well as making a historical run in the NCAA Tournament – reaching the quarterfinals – the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men’s soccer team has been selected as the preseason favorite to claim the 2023 SoCon men’s soccer title in voting completed by the league’s head coaches.

This is the third-consecutive year that the Spartans were picked to finish atop the conference.

UNCG totaled 25 points in the poll with five first-place votes. Mercer and ETSU tied for second with 18 points, while the Bears received the final first-place vote. Furman (12 points), Wofford (10 points), and VMI (5 points) followed in fourth, fifth, and sixth place, respectively.

The SoCon men’ s soccer head coaches also selected an 11-member preseason All-Conference team, expanding to 12 players due to a tie in voting, with UNCG garnering three selections.

Emmanuel Hagan, Ethan Conley, and Basile Marc who were all All-SoCon team honorees last season, picked up Preseason All-Conference accolades.

The Spartans finished the 2022 season first in 12 different statistical categories in the SoCon. The team led the way in assists per game, corner kicks per game, goal differential, points per game, scoring offense, shot accuracy, shots per game, shots on goal per game, total assists, total goals, total points and its won-lost-tied percentage.

As a team, the Spartans were in the top 40 of 18 categories, including ninth penalty kicks, 13th in total assists, 15th in assists per game, 16th in shutout percentage, 17th in team goals against average, 19th in fouls per game, total goals, and total points, 25th in won-lost-tied percentage, 26th in save percentage, 32nd corner kicks per game, 33rd in points per game and shot accuracy, 35th in shots per game, 36th in goal differential, saves per game, 38th in scoring offense, and 39th in shots on goal per game.

In addition, UNCG achieved its highest ranking in program history at No. 5 in the United Soccer Coaches final poll of the 2022 season. The previous highest ranking was No. 9 in 2004.

UNCG enters the 2023 season as the No. 10 team in the country, as announced by the United Soccer Coaches in the preseason poll. UNCG was sandwiched between ACC foe Clemson who totaled 113 points, good for ninth in the nation, and Marshall, who received 109 points, was voted to finish 11th.

The Spartans, led by fifth-year head coach Chris Rich, will return 15 Spartans from last years’ roster and add 14 newcomers. UNCG will host Radford on Friday, August 18 at the UNCG Soccer Stadium for its final exhibition match at 7:00 p.m. The Spartans then welcome California Berkeley to the UNCG Soccer Stadium on Thursday, August 24 at 7:00 p.m. for their home season opener.
