Rockingham County Roundup with Ramey(Jay) looking back at this week’s high school football games

In a game that was much closer than the scoreboard suggested, the McMichael Phoenix defeated the South Stokes Sauras, 29-6. McMichael relied on their defense, and a huge start to the game by both Jayden Moore and Cody Peters, to propel themselves to a second win in three weeks.

The first quarter could not have gone any better for McMichael. Cody Peters intercepted it in good field position, and the Phoenix started their first offensive drive from the thirty-six. Jayden Moore would take two direct snaps to punch in the first touchdown. Then, Cody Peters would pick off another pass, and a huge pass from Jace Dunne to Tyvon Dalton set up another rushing touchdown by Jayden Moore. On the third offensive McMichael drive, Moore would go three yards for another six on the board.

Moore, who had twenty-two rushing touchdowns last season, had back-to-back-to-back scores on the first three drives. This allowed McMichael to jump out to a quick 23-0 lead, one which the Sauras were never able to recover from. However, the win cannot only be attributed to that dominant rushing presence; the defense were on their toes the entire time, only allowing six points the entire game.

Cody Peters accounted for two of the interceptions, while Micah Hart snagged the third of the night. In the fourth quarter, Isaiah Belcher got in on the action with a massive end zone interception that sealed the deal.

Jace Dunne showed off his ability to send the football to outer space, and, not only was he able to launch it, he was able to accurately pinpoint where his receivers were going to be. Multiple plays by the QB had the fans in awe. While he did throw a pair of interceptions, the positives of his arm ability far, far outweighed the negatives.

Around the Rock, the Morehead Panthers were downed by the Northeast Guilford Rams in McLeansville, in a game that was tied until the fourth quarter. Yesterday, the Reidsville Rams beat the Rockingham Cougars, 28-19.

Reidsville is 3-0, both Rockingham and McMichael are 2-1, and Morehead is 0-3 heading into the bye week. Overall, the county has performed very well for the first few weeks, and, aside from Morehead, the only losses have been to one another. No out-of-county team has beaten Reidsville, Rockingham, or McMichael, through these first three weeks.
