Around the Rock: Ramey’s Rockingham County Review Ready with Reidsville Rams, McMichael Fighting Phoenix, Morehead Panthers, and Rockingham County Cougars

Ramey’s Rockingham County Review Ready with Reidsville Rams, McMichael Fighting Phoenix, Morehead Panthers, and Rockingham County Cougars
from Jay Ramey, covering Rockingham County high school football for GreensboroSports.com

While there weren’t any games in Rockingham County this week, there was still plenty of action away from the Rock. The McMichael Phoenix took on the Southwestern Randolph Cougars in Asheboro, the Morehead Panthers battled the Williams Bulldogs in Burlington, and the Reidsville Rams went at it with the Eastern Alamance Eagles in Mebane.

McMichael couldn’t put more than a touchdown on the board in their 7-20 loss to Southwestern Randolph. They are 2-2 heading into their county rivalry game with the Morehead Panthers, the game I plan to cover for GreensboroSports next week.

Morehead fell to Williams, 7-44. According to MaxPreps, the Bulldogs are a top twenty team in the 3-A Conference. Next week, Morehead will be back to 2-A football when they face McMichael in a county rivalry matchup and try to notch their first victory of the season.

Reidsville lost for the first time this season, 14-19, in a neck-and-neck, down-to-the-wire game with Eastern Alamance. The Rams, who have caught the injury bug this season, missed some opportunities late in the game, allowing Eastern Alamance to seize the win. Next week, Reidsville will try to get back on track against the North Forsyth Vikings, whom they beat 36-7 last September.

The Rockingham Cougars had a well-deserved bye this week after a strong start to the season. They are 2-1, with their only loss coming to Reidsville in a close game at Cougar Stadium last week. Up next for the black-and-white is a bout with the Southern Guilford Storm, a fellow 3-A team, in Greensboro.

Following a fantastic opening three weeks for the Rock, this week was nothing to write home about. However, all four of these high schools will have the chance to get back on track next Friday, and, while this week was, as stated, nothing to write home about, it was also nothing to get upset about. Injuries happen, we’re early in the season, and each of these teams have had some positives early this season. Only one team has a losing record in the county. Expect the Rock to perform on a much higher level come September 15th.
