Davidson Halts UNCG Men’s Soccer, 1-0

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men’s soccer team fell to non-conference in-state rival Davidson on Wednesday afternoon at the UNCG Soccer Stadium with a score of 1-0.

This was the first meeting between the two teams since October 1, 2019. This was UNCG’s third-straight in-state battle.

HOW IT HAPPENED
With a slow but defensive start to the first half, Davidson connected for the first shot on goal at 13:24. Vincent Bennage went one-on-one with a Spartan defender charging into the 18-yard box. Bennage made space and took a left-footed shot from the left side that Mathias Balle was able to stop with a kick save. Twelve of the 25 total fouls occurred in the first half.

After an initial shot from Davidson to start the second half, UNCG tallied its first shot on goal with Donovan Roux’s strike in the 60th minute from the right side of the 18-yard box. Just over a minute later, the Spartans were called for a foul and Davidson set up for a set piece right outside the 18-yard box. Denis Krioutchenkov took the free kick and lifted it over UNCG’s wall clipping the underside of the crossbar at 60:45 for a 1-0 advantage.

Later in the frame, UNCG had a great chance to tie the game, as Arnaud Tattevin ripped a tough shot from the right side that nicked the far post in the 72nd minute. Emmanuel Hagan had his own chance to help the Spartans at 89:44 with a header that went wide left of the post.
