Turnovers Plague Quakers on Homecoming

The Guilford College football team hosted the 11th-ranked Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets. The Quakers faced difficulties and fell to the Yellow Jackets, 70-14.

Guilford received the opening kickoff and the struggles started from there. On their first three plays from scrimmage, the Quakers fumbled the ball twice, both times recovered by Randolph-Macon.

The Yellow Jackets capitalized on both fumbles and led 14-0 just under five minutes into the game. Guilford’s next possession, it was able to pick up a first down on a Malik Woodard, 23-yard rush. On the next play, Randolph-Macon’s Jackson Deaver broke on a Bailey Baker pass. Just one play later, the visitors were into the endzone for the 21-0 lead.

The visitors held the advantage into the second quarter and scored just over a minute in to lead by four scores (28-0). RMC capitalized on another GC turnover to lead 35-0 with 10:11 left in the first half.

Following a four-and-out, Adam Lacy intercepted the Yellow Jackets quarterback to give Guilford one of its best starting positions of the day. The Quakers put together their best drive as they went 55 yards in 16 plays capped off by an 18-yard Baker to JuJu Rice touchdown. A successful point after made it 35-7 with 1:49 on the clock.

Randolph-Macon looked posed to score once more but an illegal forward followed by an incompletion gave the ball back to Guilford. On the second play of the drive, Baker was taken down and fumbled the ball as the visitors recovered the ball. Baker was unfortunately hurt on the play and was out for the remainder of the game.

Two plays later, the Yellow Jackets found the endzone once more and led 42-7 at the break.

The second half was very similar to the first with Randolph-Macon scoring 21-unanswered points to lead 63-7 with 10:08 remaining in regulation. The lone Guilford score came when Tristan Bailey intercepted the ball and returned it 34 yards for the score. The visitors add one last score to close out the game.

Guilford hits the road on Saturday, October 7 to face the Washington and Lee University Generals. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
