UNCG Women’s Basketball Outlasts NC Central to Stay Undefeated at Home

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women’s basketball team claimed a 66-55 win over NC Central on Thursday night in Fleming Gym to remain undefeated at home (7-0).

Two Spartans recorded double-figures in Thursday’s contest. Jayde Gamble led the Spartans in scoring with 16 points. Isys Grady was one rebound shy of a double-double after notching 14 points and nine boards.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Thursday’s contest started off with a back-and-forth first quarter with both teams taking advantage of the lead on several occasions. A three-pointer from NC Central’s Kimeira Burks gave the visiting team a three-point advantage (22-19). Antoniette Emma-Nnopu notched a layup to cut the deficit to one (22-21) at the end of the first frame.

With UNCG down 25-24 in the second quarter, a fast break layup from Grady began an 11-2 run for the Spartans to gain an eight-point lead over the Eagles (35-27). The Spartans were able to maintain the lead for the remainder of the quarter, heading into halftime with a six-point advantage, 38-32.

Both the Spartans and the Eagles came out of the locker room prepared to battle to complete an almost evenly matched third quarter. NC Central was able to outscore UNCG by one in the third frame (14-13). However, the Spartans continued to hold the advantage to go into the final quarter ahead, 51-46.

UNCG closed out the final period by outscoring the Eagles 19-15. A layup from Gamble at 3:25 gave the Spartans their biggest lead of the night with an 11-point advantage over the Eagles (61-50). The Blue & Gold went 6-for-16 in field goals in the final period and shot 75 percent from the free-throw line.

Khalis Cain matched her season high of 12 rebounds.
Kennedy Simpson posted a new career high of three blocks.
UNCG scored 24 points off the bench to North Carolina Central’s two.
The Spartans posted 42 points in the paint, while the Eagles trailed with 16.
