Godwin Steps Down as UNCG Baseball Head Coach

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Billy Godwin will be stepping down from his position as head coach of the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team on December 31, 2023, as announced on Tuesday, December 19. Godwin will be rejoining the New York Yankees in a scouting role.

Assistant Coach Cody Ellis has been named Interim Head Coach through the spring season.

“After discussing this opportunity with my family and physician, I felt this was the right time in my career and a tremendous opportunity to rejoin the New York Yankees,” stated Godwin. “I have enjoyed my time here at UNCG and working with Director of Athletics Brian Mackin; he is a tremendous leader.

“UNCG has outstanding young men who have played and are playing in this program. They are the reason the baseball program has such a great culture. I could not have asked for a better four seasons after returning to college baseball. This decision was not easy, but I know the past four teams have left a legacy. This has included four consecutive years of a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better, being a big part of the community by having the most community service hours by a team at UNCG, and seeing success on the field, which included winning a SoCon Tournament and having the fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. I wish UNCG nothing but the best.”

Godwin led the program for four seasons and posted a 98-94 overall record, bringing his three-stop college coaching mark to 677-393-1 (.632). He coached the 2022 team to a SoCon Tournament Title, the first since 2017, as well as earning the program’s fourth NCAA Tournament appearance, the first since 2017. Godwin coached five Spartans to the Major League Baseball Draft (MLB). His players earned numerous recognitions both nationally, regionally, and from the Conference.

His UNCG resume includes coaching the 2022 SoCon Player of the Year, Hogan Windish, and the 2022 SoCon and Media Pitcher of the Year, Alex Hoppe. He coached Kennedy Jones, the 2022 Most Outstanding Player of the SoCon Tournament, and five others named to the All-Tournament Team. Godwin also saw 12 student-athletes receive SoCon All-Conference recognition during his time with the Blue & Gold. He had one earn ABCA All-American honors, three voted to the ABCA All-Atlantic Region Team, one named to the Baseball American All-America Team, one to the Baseball Freshman All-American Team, two to the Collegiate Baseball/Louisville Slugger All-American Team, one to the Collegiate Baseball/Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Team, one to the D1Baseball All-American Team, one to the NCBWA All-American Team, and one to the NCBWA Freshman All-American Team.

“I want to thank Billy for his contributions to UNCG and wish him the best of luck on his transition,” remarked Mackin. “He will be missed, but his name will always be associated with the UNCG baseball program.”

Since 1991 when UNCG became a Division I member, baseball has won four regular season titles, three Tournament Championships, and appeared in four NCAA Tournaments.
