UNCG Women’s Basketball Claims a Staggering 78-33 Victory Over Converse

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women’s basketball team dominated in a 78-33 victory over Converse on Friday night to remain undefeated at home (8-0).

Three Spartans scored double figures in the game, including Jayde Gamble with 16 points, Ayanna Khalfani with 15 and Nia Howard with 10.

HOW IT HAPPENED
A jumper in the paint from Isys Grady, followed by a fast break layup from Gamble put the Spartans up 4-0 in the first minute of Friday’s contest. With UNCG up 6-2, the Valkyries dropped four unanswered points to tie the game at six points apiece. However, a pull-up from Grady gave the Spartans control once again to never allow Converse to lead in the game. UNCG completed the first frame with a 9-0 run to lead 17-7 heading to the bench.

The Spartans continued to widen their lead in the second quarter by starting things off with a 5-0 run. UNCG outscored Converse 18-10 in the second frame. After going 12-for-14 at the free-throw line in the first half, UNCG went to the locker room on top, 35-17.

Converse scored first in the third frame, but a layup from Gamble started a 17-0 run for the Spartans for their largest run of the night. UNCG outscored Converse 23-6 in the third quarter with eight points off the bench and 14 points in the paint. The Blue & Gold held a 58-23 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of the third quarter.

The Spartans closed out the win in the fourth quarter. With 45 seconds remaining in the game, freshman Makiah Asidanya produced a three-point play to give UNCG its largest lead of the game (78-31). Converse’s Jennifer Pongon chipped in a second chance layup for a 78-33 final score.

Gamble was one rebound shy of a double-double with her 16 points and a new career high of nine boards.
Joelle Davis led the Spartans from behind the arc, going 3-for-6 to earn a new career high of nine points.
Khalis Cain followed closely behind with eight rebounds.
Asidanya earned a career high of nine points and seven rebounds.
Nina Horvath dropped a new career high of two rebounds and two assists.
UNCG scored 40 points in the paint, while Converse had 14.
The Spartans posted 29 points off the bench to the Valkyries’ 14.
The Blue & Gold produced 25 points from turnovers.
