UNCG Men’s Basketball Battles ETSU on Saturday at Home

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men’s basketball team continues The Southern Conference (SoCon) slate, hosting ETSU on Saturday, January 6 at the Greensboro Coliseum with a start time of 4:00 p.m.

UNCG is 10-4 overall this season and 1-0 in The Southern Conference (SoCon) play, while ETSU is 9-5 overall and 1-0 in conference action. The Spartans are 6-0 this season when playing at home. UNCG was last 6-0 to start the home slate in 2018-19.

This will be the 41st meeting between the two teams, where ETSU holds a 21-19 edge. The two teams have split the regular season series during the last three years.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS

UNCG kicked off the New Year with a 79-68 victory over preseason favorites and reigning SoCon Champions Furman on Wednesday at the Coliseum.
Four Spartans scored double figures, including Donovan Atwell and Keyshaun Langley leading the charge with 17 points each.
Mikeal Brown-Jones tallied his third-career double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Joryam Saizonou chipped in 13 points for a new season high.
UNCG shot 50-percent from behind the arc, making it the fourth time this season shooting 50 or better.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS

Currently, the Spartans are ranked nationally in the top 50 in seven categories: 15th in three pointers per game (10.0), 16th three-point percentage (38.9), 28th in field goal percentage defense (39.0), 34th in turnovers per game (10.2), 44th in effective field goals (0.551), 45th in assist/turnover ratio (1.46), and 49th in defensive rebounds per game (28.14).
UNCG is outscoring its opponents 78.6-69.9 and is averaging 6.4 steals per game compared to its foes who are averaging 5.1 per game.
They are leading the SoCon in assist/turnover ratio, field goal percentage defense, and turnovers per game.
Kobe Langley is nationally ranked 17th in assist/turnover ratio (3.33), 24th in assists (80), 27th in assists per game (5.7), 34th in steals (31), and 42nd in steals per game (2.21).
Atwell is nationally ranked 34th in three pointers per game (2.93), and 38th in total three point field goals made (41), 49th in three point attempts (101), and 50th in three point percentage (40.6).
Three Spartans are averaging double figures, including Brown-Jones who is contributing 19.1 points a game, Keyshaun is averaging 14.5 points a game, and Atwell is averaging 11.9 points per game.
Keyshaun was named SoCon Player of the Week (Nov. 20), and Brown-Jones earned the honor on November 27.
The Spartans were voted to finish second in the SoCon Preseason Coaches’ Poll and fourth in the Media Poll. They received one first-place vote in the Coaches’ Poll.
Keyshaun and Brown-Jones were selected to the SoCon Preseason All-SoCon team.
The Spartans return eight from last year’s roster, while adding three transfers and three freshmen.

SCOUTING THE BUCCANEERS

ETSU was voted to finish seventh in the SoCon Preseason Coaches Poll and sixth in the media poll.
The Buccaneers are outscoring opponents 72.8-67.8.
Ebby Asamoah is 25th in the nation in three pointers per game (3.00) and 47th in total three-point field goals made (39).
Karon Boyd is 28th nationally averaging 3.43 offensive rebounds per game.
Boyd is averaging 7.6 boards per game to lead the team.
Three Bucs are averaging double figures, including Asamoah (15.6), Quimari Peterson (14.5), and Jaden Seymour (13.8).
The Bucs are leading the SoCon in blocks per game (4.4), free throw attempts per game (22.3), free throws made per game (16.4), offensive rebounds per game (13.71), and three point percentage defense (29.0).
Nationally, ETSU is ranked 28th in offensive rebounds per game (13.71), 36th in three-point percentage defense (29.0), 46th in rebounds per game (40.36), 47th in free throws made per game (16.4), and 49th in field goal percentage defense (39.8).
