UNCG’s Brown-Jones Scores Career-Best 39 Points in 73-67 Win Over The Citadel

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men’s basketball team won its eighth-straight home game behind a 73-67 victory over The Citadel on Saturday at the Greensboro Coliseum.

The 8-0 record at home matches the home start from the 2004-05 season.

Mikeal Brown-Jones dominated the floor with a stellar career-high of 39 points. He is the first Spartan since Isaiah Miller to score 30 or more points. Miller scored 32 at ETSU on February 27, 2021. Brown-Jones’ 39 points is now fourth best in the record book for single game points record.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Donovan Atwell drained two threes to give UNCG a 6-2 lead at 18:04 in the first half, but The Citadel went on a 7-3 run to tie the game for the first time at nine points each at 16:16. An 11-2 run by the Bulldogs put them on top for the first time with 9:21 remaining in the first half, 20-19. The Spartans utilized a 19-9 run to conclude the first half and go into the locker room with a nine-point advantage, 38-29. UNCG saw its largest lead of 12 in the game twice in the first half with the first on a three-pointer from Tim Ceaser and the second on a layup from Brown-Jones.

Eleven-straight points from the Bulldogs began the second half, giving The Citadel its second lead of the game, 40-38. The two teams traded baskets and tied the score four more times with the last knotted score at 51 points apiece with 7:48 left on the clock. Brown-Jones splashed his third three-pointer of the game at 7:20 and the Spartans never looked back. The Citadel saw a two-point deficit with 4:23 remaining as Elijah Morgan made a three-pointer, 60-58. Brown-Jones secured the win with four made free throws in the last 13 seconds of the game for a 73-67 victory.

BY THE NUMBERS

Atwell was second for the Spartans with nine points.
Jalen Breath paced the game with nine rebounds.
Kobe Langley chipped in six assists and six points.
Keyshaun Langley registered seven points and five assists.
UNCG had 17 points off turnovers compared to The Citadel’s nine.
The Spartans held the edge in field goal percentage, shooting 50-percent, while the Bulldogs shot 46-percent.
