UNCG Men’s Basketball Escapes the Claws of Defeat in Overtime Win over Catamounts, 85-82

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men’s basketball team defeated Western Carolina behind a gritty 85-82 overtime win on Wednesday night at the Ramsey Center.

Mikeal Brown-Jones scored a game-high 39 points, for the second time this season to give UNCG its fourth-straight win. Keyshaun Langley chipped in 17 points, while Jalen Breath registered 11 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Catamounts had the first basket of the game and the Spartans responded as Donovan Atwell made a jumper at 19:04 to tie the game at two. Following Atwell’s jumper, UNCG never looked back and ran with the advantage the rest of the first half. Western Carolina came within six, 16-10, with 12:30 left on the clock, but UNCG responded with seven straight points to climb to a 13-point advantage, 23-10. The Catamounts went on their own 7-0 run to close the gap to six, 23-17, with 8:47 on the clock. After three scoreless minutes for either team, Brown-Jones drained his second three-pointer of the game at 5:05. Brown-Jones went on to score six of UNCG’s eight points for the rest of the half to put the Spartans up 13 heading into the break, 39-26.

After Western Carolina cut the deficit to nine, 39-30, UNCG saw a layup and a three pointer from Brown-Jones for a 14-point advantage, 44-30, its largest lead of the game. The Catamounts tied the game for the second time at 9:59, 55-55, after chipping away at the score behind a 25-11 run. The game was tied two more times, including on a final basket with four seconds left in the second half by Charles Lampten, 70-70.

In the overtime period, Western Carolina took the lead three times, with the last being 77-76 with 1:57 on the clock. The Spartans secured the win behind a 9-5 run, where five points came from Brown-Jones and four came from Keyshaun for an 85-82 victory.

Brown-Jones added nine rebounds and three steals.
Keyshaun had five assists and four rebounds.
Donovan Atwell registered nine points and five boards.
Kobe Langley led the game with seven assists.
The Spartans outmatched the Catamounts in field goal percentage, three-point percentage, and free throw percentage.
Western Carolina held the edge in points in the paint, 30-28, and fastbreak points, 17-15.
