UNCG Men’s Basketball Falls On The Road At Mercer

MACON, Ga. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men’s basketball team fell to The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Mercer on the road, 86-72, on Saturday evening at Hawkins Arena.

Three Spartans tallied double figures, including Keyshaun Langley who paced UNCG with 19 points. Mikeal Brown-Jones had 15 points and Joryam Saizonou chipped in 12 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer held the advantage until Brown-Jones tied the game and then took the lead at 16:02 for the first time with back-to-back free throws, 9-8. The Spartans went on a 17-7 run to climb to an 11-point lead, 26-15, with 8:50 on the clock. The Bears then responded with a 20-5 run that put them up four, 35-31, with 3:23 left in the half. The two teams tied the score two more times in the half, before the Spartans went to the locker room with a one-point advantage, 39-38.

Mercer utilized its 58.33-percent shooting from field goal range, its 57.14-percent from behind the arc, and 94.12-percent shooting from the charity stripe to push past UNCG in the second half. The score was knotted two more times, bringing the game total to five tied scores before the Bears maintained the lead for the rest of the contest. Mercer saw a 17-point lead twice during the second half including at 2:07 and 1:05. Donovan Atwell drained his second three pointer of the game with 15-seconds left in the contest, as the Bears secured the win, 86-72.

BY THE NUMBERS

Kobe Langley chipped in eight points and a game-high four assists.
Brown-Jones and Atwell paced the team with a game-high six rebounds each.
Mercer had 30 points from the bench, while UNCG had 22.
The Bears had 26 points in the paint, while UNCG had 20.
There were eight lead changes in the game.

UP NEXT
The Spartans will return to Greensboro for the regular season home finale against VMI, where UNCG will recognize four Spartans prior to the game. The game will be at the Greensboro Coliseum and will begin at 7:00 p.m.
