UNCG’s Maddie Spell Tosses No-Hitter in 3-0 Victory Over Kennesaw State

KENNESAW, GA. – Redshirt Junior Maddie Spell did something special on Sunday afternoon at Bailey Park on the campus of Kennesaw State during the final game of the I-75 Tournament.

With Spell in the circle and freshman Ashbee Standridge behind the plate, the pair tossed a no-hitter. This was the first time in Spell’s collegiate career and first time for UNCG since current junior Reese Byrd threw a no-hitter on February 13, 2022 during her freshman campaign in an 8-0 five-inning win over Delaware State at the UNCG Softball Stadium. According to UNCG’s record book, Spell’s performance was the 14th no-hitter in program history.

“Going into today, I felt really good in my bullpen, and I wanted to translate that onto the field,” stated Spell. “My defense was outstanding behind my back, and I couldn’t have asked for a more stellar performance from them. While the thought of a no-hitter crossed my mind at times, I continued to take the game pitch-by-pitch and do what I needed to do for my teammates.”

This was also the Spartans’ first shutout of the season.

Spell earned her sixth win of the season and 19th of her career by striking out four batters in an eight-inning complete game and hitting one batter. She faced 25 batters, retiring 15 on flyout and five on ground outs. She threw a total of 111 pitches.

“Coach Brynne and I have been working tirelessly for a big moment like that, so it was fun for all of our hard work to pay off,” continued Spell. “Having Ashbee behind the plate was super fun and she did such an amazing job. It was a memorable experience to share with her.”

In a long-lasting pitcher’s duel, UNCG had the first base runner of the game in the top of the second as Anna White was hit by a pitch. The Spartans also had the first hit of the game as Brooklynn Maxwell doubled in the top of the sixth, breaking Lindsey Kyte’s chance at a no-hitter.

The Owls’ first base runner came in the bottom of the sixth on a hit by pitch.

In the top of the eighth, Maycin Brown led off with Kyte’s third hit batter of the day and stole second. With one out, Maxwell singled to the shortstop and Jessie Shipley followed with a triple to left center that bounced off the wall scoring Brown and Maxwell, 2-0. After the second out, White doubled to center field and Grace Loftin scored from first base to put the Spartans up 3-0.

In the bottom of the frame, Spell retired all three batters with a fly out, a pop up and then her final strikeout of the day.

“It was a feeling like no other getting a strikeout for the last out of that game,” mentioned Spell. “I wouldn’t have been able to do it without everyone continuing to have my back.”
