UNCG Men’s Basketball Reaches Century Mark in 100-58 Victory on Senior Night

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men’s basketball team reached the century mark, as the Spartans defeated VMI, 100-58, on Wednesday night at the Greensboro Coliseum on senior night.

This was the first time since February 28, 2019, that the Spartans scored 100 points against a Southern Conference (SoCon) and Division I opponent. UNCG last defeated The Citadel, 100-96, in Charleston, South Carolina.

This was the second time this season that UNCG scored 100 or more points. The Spartans defeated Virginia University of Lynchburg on December 21, 2023 in Greensboro, North Carolina in Fleming Gymnasium, 135-57, when UNCG recorded numerous program records.

During the game tonight, UNCG recognized its four seniors: Tim Ceaser, Mikeal Brown-Jones, Kobe Langley, and Keyshaun Langley.

This was the fourth time this season that the Spartans have scored 50 or more points in the first half.

Brown-Jones recorded a game-high 26 points reaching the 1,000-career points milestone. Keyshaun also tallied double figures this game, recording 22 points.

With the win, UNCG is now 21-9 overall this season, which marks the first year that the Spartans have won over 20 games under the director of Head Coach Mike Jones. It is the sixth year out of 13 that Jones has recorded more than 20 wins at the helm. UNCG last won more than 20 games during the 2020-21 season when the team went 21-9 overall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Tyran Cook scored the first two jumpers for the Keydets, putting VMI up 4-2. Keyshaun gave the Spartans their first lead with his first of six three pointers with 18:34 on the clock. VMI took the lead back, but it was short lived as UNCG tied the score for the third time at nine points each with 15:57 on the clock. That started a 7-0 run for the Spartans who never looked back and remained ahead for the rest of the game.

UNCG saw its first double-figure lead with 5:57 left in the first half, following Joryam Saizonou’s three pointer, 36-26. Mikeal Brown-Jones capped the first half with his 30th dunk of the season, giving UNCG a 16-point advantage, 50-34, heading to halftime. The Spartans climbed to a 45-point advantage with 1:11 left in the second half, as Keyon Webb drove through the key for a layup, 100-55. VMI closed the game with three points, as UNCG secured its 21st win of the season, 100-58.

BY THE NUMBERS

This was Brown-Jones 10th game this season scoring 20 or more points.
He also chipped in a game-high nine rebounds.
This was Keyshaun’s sixth game this season scoring 20 or more points.
Keyshaun had five assists for his 10th game this season with five or more dimes.
Jalen Breath recorded nine points and eight rebounds.
Ceaser registered eight points and seven rebounds.
UNCG’s 37 field goals made is the most this season against a Division I school and second most this season.
The Spartans’ 16 three pointers and 59.3 three-point percentage is the best this season.
UNCG had 19 points off of turnovers compared to VMI’s four.
The Spartans registered 26 points from the bench, while VMI had nine.
UNCG outmatched VMI in field goal percentage (57.8-41.5) and three point percentage (59.3-45.5).
