Baseball Sweeps Canisius in Doubleheader

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team claimed a double header sweep over Canisius on Saturday at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

Game 1: UNCG 4 – CANISIUS 1
The Spartans got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the second. Trey Truitt sent out his third home run of the season to right field for two RBI, scoring himself and Matt Venuto (2-0).

Caleb Cozart grounded out to shortstop for the second out, but Wolf was able to score from third for the Spartans’ third run of the game, 3-0.

The Spartans added their final run of the day in the bottom of the fourth. Cam Murphy doubled down the third base line, scoring Luke Holland for the 4-0 lead.

Canisius scored its only run in the top of the fifth with a double down the third base line from Trent Rumley to score Mike DeStefano for the final run of the game.

Freshman Noah Chapman threw a career high six strikeouts in his 4.2 innings of action.

Game 2: UNCG 18 – CANISIUS 12
The Golden Griffins struck first in game two putting up six runs in the first inning. The Spartans were able to get on the board in their half of the first inning after Cozart flew out to right field to send Wolf home, cutting the deficit to five (6-1).

Jay Miller was able to keep Canisius from scoring in innings two, three and four after throwing a career high eight strikeouts in his four innings of waction, facing 16 batters.

The Spartans got busy on offense by producing at least one run in every inning of Saturday’s second game. UNCG recorded a total of three runs in the second inning. Murphy was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Truitt. Still with the bases loaded, Wolf walked, allowing Holland to score. The final run of this inning came off Cozart reaching third base on a fielder’s choice bringing home Jacob Dilley (6-4).

Holland added another run for the Spartans in the fourth inning with his first career home run going down the left field line, bringing the Spartans back within one (6-5).

UNCG added two more runs a piece in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, while Canisius collected two more runs in its half of the fifth inning, giving UNCG the 11-9 over the Golden Griffins.

The Spartans added a combined seven runs between the seventh and eighth innings. One of those runs came off a double to left center from Luke Jenkins, bringing home Murphy. The final two runs of the day for the Spartans were scored off a double down the right field line from Brantley Truitt bringing Jake Ogden and Jenkins across home plate for the 18-8 lead.

Canisius tried to bounce back in the top of the ninth by scoring four runs. However, Sean Smith was able to close it out for the Spartans on the mound for the 18-12 win.

The last time the Spartans recorded 18 runs in a game was last season in a 18-13 win over Mercer on April 29, 2023, in Macon, Ga.
