UNCG Softball Scores Late for 5-3 Win Over Merrimack

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team opened the UNCG Invitational with a 5-3 win over Merrimack on Thursday at the UNCG Softball Stadium.

The Spartans tallied 10 hits for the fifth time this season.

How it happened:

Merrimack got on board in the top of the first with one run on two hits and one error. With runners in scoring position, Sydney Samuel reached on an error and Ellen Hubbard scored for a 1-0 advantage, before the Spartans retired the side with a pop up.

The Warriors extended its lead to three on Hubbard’s RBI single with one out scoring Thiana Brito and Madison Cerpa’s sacrifice fly scoring Sofia Palyan from third.

In the bottom of the second with two outs, UNCG had runners on second and third for Jessie Shipley’s RBI double to right field, which cut the deficit to one, 3-2. The Spartans retired Merrimack with three-straight batters in the top of the third and tied the game at three with Grace Loftin’s fifth home run of the season.

Neither team scored in the fourth or fifth innings. After a flyout in the bottom of the sixth, Shipley singled and then advanced to second on a passed ball. Brooklynn Maxwell then singled and advanced to second on an error, scoring Shipley for the Spartans first lead, 4-3. Loftin then singled to put runners on the corners, and both Maxwell and Loftin stole bases to add to the lead, 5-3. With Salem Ward in the circle, Merrimack was retired twice on strikeouts and a ground out for her second win of the season.
