UNCG Softball Splits Twin Bill with Radford

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team split a midweek doubleheader against non-conference Big South foe Radford at the UNCG Softball Stadium on Wednesday.

The Spartans came from behind to take game one with a 3-1 nine-inning victory, while the Highlanders led from start to finish in game two and won 4-3.

GAME 1: UNCG 3 – Radford 1 (9 innings)

Neither team was able to get a run up on the scoreboard until the Highlanders capitalized in the top of the sixth. Following one of Salem Ward’s 11 strikeouts of the day, Abby Wilson was hit by a pitch and then moved over on a sacrifice bunt. Kari Shedrick then drove her in on a double to center field for a 1-0 lead in favor of Radford.

The Highlanders threatened in the top of the seventh, but the Spartans fended off one run at the plate and then retired the side with a line drive to third base. UNCG’s Grace Loftin led off the bottom of the frame with a solo home run to left center to tie the game, 1-1.

After a scoreless eighth inning and Ward retiring three-straight in the top of the ninth, UNCG took advantage in the bottom of the ninth. Brooklynn Maxwell led off the ninth with a walk and following a fly out, Anna White crushed her fifth homer of the season to right center for a walk-off two-run homer for a 3-1 win. Ward’s 11 strikeouts were a career high for the sophomore.

UNCG was able to cut the deficit to two in the bottom of the third with Tori Dalehite’s second home run of the season, 3-1, a solo shot to right field.

The Highlanders scored one run in each of the sixth and seventh innings to take a 4-1 lead. The first tally was scored on an RBI ground out in the sixth and then Tori Boyd scored on an RBI single up the middle by Taylor Breidt in the seventh.

The Spartans fought back but came up short in the bottom of the seventh as Meredith Harwood and Maycin Brown crushed back-to-back home runs to cut the deficit to 4-3. UNCG then loaded the bases, but Radford got out of the jam with a strikeout to end the game and secure the win.
