Baseball Welcomes ETSU for SoCon Action

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team will continue The Southern Conference (SoCon) slate by hosting ETSU in a series from Thursday, March 28 to Saturday, March 30 at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
The Spartans most recently opened up the SoCon schedule by going 2-1 in their series against Mercer at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
Mercer got the first win of the series on Friday, but UNCG rallied back to claim the wins on Saturday and Sunday.
The Spartans closed out the weekend with a 13-3 win over the Bears in seven innings.
This was the first time since the 2019 season that UNCG has won two games in the series against Mercer.
The last time UNCG won a seven-inning game was in the 2022 season with a 12-2 win over Wofford in the SoCon Championship to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
UNCG heads into the series with a 13-10 overall record and 2-1 in SoCon.
UNCG is ranked 14th nationally with four sacrifice bunts and 11th nationally with 13 stolen bases and a 3.25 stolen bases per game average.
Caleb Cozart is leading the Spartans with 26 runs, 11 home runs and 32 RBI on the season.
Mitchell Smith stands out on the field for UNCG with 169 total putouts.
Jeremy Wolf is pacing the team with a perfect 14-for-14 on stolen bases.
Rob Ready was named the SoCon Pitcher of the Week this past Monday after throwing for a complete game with a career high nine strikeouts in game two against Mercer.
Cozart was named the SoCon Player of the Week and the Perfect Game Player of the Week after hitting four home runs in the season opening series against Fairfield.
Julien Peissel was selected as the SoCon Pitcher of the Week after starting off on the mound in UNCG’s win over No. 1 Wake Forest on Tuesday, Feb. 20. Peissel is leading the team on the mound with 26 strikeouts.
UNCG was tabbed to finish sixth in the 2024 SoCon Preseason Coaches’ Poll.
Ready was named to the Preseason All-SoCon second team.
The Spartans finished the 2023 season with a 25-34 overall record and 9-12 in SoCon play to earn the sixth spot in the SoCon Preseason Coaches’ Poll. UNCG concluded the season in the semifinal round of the SoCon Tournament, falling to No. 1 Samford, 9-5.
The Spartans welcome 22 newcomers for the 2024 season: 10 transfers and 12 freshmen.
18 Spartans return from last season for UNCG.
SCOUTING THE BUCS
ETSU heads to Greensboro this week with a 16-7 overall record.
The Bucs most recently went 2-1 in their conference opening series against Western Carolina in Cullowhee, N.C.
Sunday’s game against the Catamounts was a back-and-forth battle that went the way for the Bucs, 9-8 in 12 innings.
Nick Iannontone is leading ETSU with 27 runs and 34 hits.
Cameron Sisneros paces the team with six home runs and 35 RBI.
Cody Miller is 6-for-7 in stolen bases attempted this season.
Jace Hyde stands out on the mound for the Bucs with 35 total strikeouts in his 27.2 innings pitched.
ETSU was picked just ahead of UNCG in the SoCon Preseason Coaches’ Poll at fifth place.
Sisneros was named to the Preseason All-SoCon Baseball First Team, while four on the team were tabbed to Preseason All-SoCon Baseball Second Team.
SERIES HISTORY VS THE BUCS
The Spartans lead in the overall series against ETSU at 40-20. UNCG claimed the last meeting with ETSU in the SoCon Tournament, 4-2. The Spartans went 1-2 with the Bucs in the regular season last year in Johnson City, Tenn.
