UNCG Baseball Claims Game Two Against ETSU, 12-9

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team claimed game two of its series against ETSU, 12-9 on Friday at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

ETSU got on the board first in the contest with three runs in the first inning. However, UNCG responded with four runs in its half of the first. First Jake Ogden singled to center field, scoring Jeremy Wolf (3-1). In the next at bat, Caleb Cozart flew out to center field, bringing Aidan Brewer home (3-2). Trey Truitt followed in the lineup with a ground out to second base, sending Ogden home to tie the game (3-3). Later on, with bases loaded, Zachary Walsh walked to first base on an HBP, bringing Mitchell Smith in for the 4-3 lead.

After a scoreless second inning UNCG grew its lead to three with Tyler Steele’s first collegiate hit, a RBI triple in the bottom of the third (6-3).

The Bucs tacked on another run in the fifth inning before the Spartans recorded two of their own in the bottom half for the 8-4 lead.

Another set of runs was added for the Spartans in the sixth inning when Trey doubled down the left field line scoring Ogden and then again when Smith singled to center field, sending Trey across home plate (10-4).

ETSU cut its deficit to one in the seventh inning with five runs. Walsh responded in the bottom half with his first collegiate homer going to right field for the Spartans to stay on top, 11-9.

Cozart gave the Spartans their final run in the eighth inning after sending out his 14th homer of the season for the 12-9 victory.

Luke Thomas closed it out on the mound for the Spartans with one of his three strikeouts coming in the ninth inning.

Steele and Walsh led the Spartans with three RBI. Steele’s three RBI was a career high for the freshman.
Smith led the team with three runs.
Cozart and Smith paced UNCG on the field with seven putouts apiece.
Rob Ready led the Spartans on the bump with four strikeouts.
