UNCG Baseball Set for Rematch to the Demon Deacons

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team will look to clinch a season sweep over No. 21 Wake Forest on Tuesday, April 2 at the David F. Couch Ballpark in Winston-Salem, N.C. for a 6 p.m. start.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
The Spartans went 2-1 in a Southern Conference (SoCon) series against ETSU from Thursday to Saturday at the UNCG Baseball Stadium this past week.
UNCG claimed the first two games, but ETSU was able to come away with the win on Saturday to keep the Spartans from earning the sweep.
Luke Holland and Caleb Cozart led the Spartans with two home runs apiece over the weekend series.
As a team, UNCG had five homers alone in the first game of the series, getting past the Bucs, 10-8.
Thursday’s five homers was the first time that the Spartans have had five home runs in a single game since May 3, 2008. During that season, the team had five against College of Charleston winning 12-9 on May 3, 2008, and then five on April 12, 2008 in a 16-9 win over Wofford.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
UNCG will travel to Winston-Salem with a 15-11 overall record and is 4-2 in the SoCon.
The Spartans stand out nationally at 10th with 59 stolen bases and 11th with a 2.46 stolen bases per game average.
GC Jarman is ranked 17th nationally with a 0.25 sacrifice bunts per game average.
Jeremy Wolf stands out at eighth nationally with a 0.70 average in stolen bases per game. Wolf is perfect with a 15-15 record in stealing bases.
Rob Ready is only one of three players in the SoCon to have pitched a complete game.
Ready was named the SoCon Pitcher of the Week last Monday after throwing for a complete game with a career high nine strikeouts in game two against Mercer.
Cozart stands out at sixth nationally with 12 home runs and is fifth with a 0.57 home runs per game average. In addition, he is 25th in the country with a 1.48 RBI average.
Cozart was named the SoCon Player of the Week and the Perfect Game Player of the Week after hitting four home runs in the season opening series against Fairfield.
Julien Peissel was selected as the SoCon Pitcher of the Week after starting off on the mound in UNCG’s win over No. 1 Wake Forest on Tuesday, Feb. 20. Peissel is leading the team on the mound with 31 strikeouts.
UNCG was tabbed to finish sixth in the 2024 SoCon Preseason Coaches’ Poll.
Ready was named to the Preseason All-SoCon second team.
The Spartans finished the 2023 season with a 25-34 overall record and 9-12 in SoCon play to earn the sixth spot in the SoCon Preseason Coaches’ Poll. UNCG concluded the season in the semifinal round of the SoCon Tournament, falling to No. 1 Samford, 9-5.
The Spartans welcome 22 newcomers for the 2024 season: 10 transfers and 12 freshmen.
18 Spartans return from last season for UNCG.

SCOUTING THE DEMON DEACONS
No. 21 Wake Forest heads into Tuesday’s contest with a 17-10 overall record and 4-8 in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
The Demon Deacons most recently fell in a series sweep to the Tar Heels at the David F. Couch Ballpark with scores of 6-5, 10-6, 14-10.
As a team, Wake Forest currently stands out in the top-10 nationally over two categories: reaching base on balls (172) and strikeouts per game (12.1).
Chase Burns is 39th in the country with a 1.93 ERA. Burns is also fourth nationally with 68 strikeouts on the 2024 stanza.
David Falco is currently ranked 27th nationally with four saves this season.
Adam Tellier leads the squad with 28 runs, 39 hits, 29 RBI and 75 total bases.
Wake Forest was selected as the 2024 ACC baseball preseason favorite after earning 10 of 14 first-place votes.
The Demon Deacons finished atop the Atlantic Division in 2023 before making a run to the Men’s College World Series championship series.

SERIES HISTORY VS THE DEMON DEACONS
UNCG is 17-48 in the overall series against Wake Forest. In the two team’s most recent meeting, the Spartans claimed the victory over then ranked No. 1 Wake Forest earlier this season at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. It was only the second time the Spartans have defeated a No. 1 team in program history. The Spartans never allowed the Demon Deacons to lead in the game.
