UNCG Baseball Dominates in 12-4 Win Over Wofford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team dominated in a 12-4 win over Wofford on Friday evening at Russell C. King Field.

Friday’s win over the Terriers marks the best start for UNCG in The Southern Conference (SoCon) since the 2018 season, improving to 5-2. UNCG started the 2018 conference slate at 6-1.

The Spartans tallied the first run of the day in the second inning when Cam Murphy singled to left field, sending Mitchell Smith across home plate for the 1-0 lead over the Terriers.

Wofford was able to tie the game in the bottom half of the second when David Wiley homered to center field (1-1).

The Terriers took the 4-1 advantage in the third inning after Dixon Black launched a home run to left center and added two more RBI off a base hit from Tyler Bak.

The Spartans cut the deficit to two in the fifth inning after Aidan Brewer flew out to left field, sending Murphy across home plate (4-2).

UNCG tallied another run in the sixth inning when Zachary Walsh recorded a base hit to Wofford’s shortstop to bring in GC Jarman (4-3).

The Spartans recorded a total of four runs in the seventh inning to take the lead and hold it for the remainder of the game. First, Caleb Cozart singled to center field for two RBI. In the next at bat, Walsh singled to left field, bringing in Cozart and Garman for the 7-4 advantage.

UNCG tacked on two more runs in the eighth inning to take the 9-4 advantage over the Terriers. The squad then added three more runs in the ninth inning. The first two runs of the final inning came when Jeremy Wolf and Murphy scored on a throwing error from Wofford’s second baseman. The final run of the day for the Spartans came when Jake Ogden flew out to center field, sending Brewer across home plate (12-4).

Danny Thompson Jr. closed out the game on the mound for the Spartans with his final batter faced, striking out swinging.

UNCG had 16 hits to Wofford’s seven.
Cozart led the Spartans with four hits.
Walsh paced the team with three RBI and posted seven putouts on the field.
Jeremy Wolf remains perfect at stolen bases this season, after tacking on one more in the game.
