UNCG Baseball to Host Big South Foe Gardner-Webb

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team is set to host non-conference foe Gardner-Webb on Tuesday, April 9 at 6 p.m. at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

UNCG most recently went 1-2 in a Southern Conference (SoCon) series at Wofford this past weekend in Spartanburg, S.C.
The Spartans claimed Friday’s matchup, 12-4, but fell in games two and three on Saturday and Sunday with scores of 8-3, 8-7, respectively.
Rob Ready led the Spartans on the mound this week with five strikeouts in game two of the series.
Sunday’s final game was a back-and-forth battle, coming down to the wire. However, Wofford was able to earn the 8-7 walk-off win with the game tied at seven runs apiece heading to the bottom of the ninth.
UNCG comes into Tuesday’s matchup with a 16-14 overall record and is 5-4 in SoCon play.
The Spartans are 3-3 in Tuesday meetings this season, with two of those wins coming over nationally ranked opponents.
As a team, UNCG is ranked in the top-30 nationally over three categories: sacrifice bunts (25), stolen bases (65) and stolen bases per game (2.17).
Ready stands out as one of five players in the SoCon to have pitched a complete game. In addition, he is fifth in the conference with a 3.40 ERA.
Caleb Cozart is currently ranked nationally at seventh with 15 homers and fifth with a 0.52 homers per game average. In addition, Cozart is 22nd in the country with a 1.41 RBI average.
Jeremy Wolf currently stands at 15th nationally with a 0.65 average in stealing bases this season. Wolf remains perfect at stealing bases at 17-for-17.
Jake Ogden paces the Spartans with 35 hits this season.
Ready was named the SoCon Pitcher of the Week after the team’s SoCon opening series win against Mercer when he threw for a complete game with a career high nine strikeouts in game two against the Bears.
Cozart was named the SoCon Player of the Week and the Perfect Game Player of the Week after hitting four home runs in the season opening series against Fairfield.
Julien Peissel was selected as the SoCon Pitcher of the Week after starting off on the mound in UNCG’s win over No. 1 Wake Forest on Tuesday, Feb. 20. Peissel is leading the team on the mound with 33 strikeouts.
UNCG was tabbed to finish sixth in the 2024 SoCon Preseason Coaches’ Poll.
Ready was named to the Preseason All-SoCon second team.
The Spartans finished the 2023 season with a 25-34 overall record and 9-12 in SoCon play to earn the sixth spot in the SoCon Preseason Coaches’ Poll. UNCG concluded the season in the semifinal round of the SoCon Tournament, falling to No. 1 Samford, 9-5.
The Spartans welcome 22 newcomers for the 2024 season: 10 transfers and 12 freshmen.
18 Spartans return from last season for UNCG.
Gardner-Webb will head to Greensboro with a 12-19 overall record and is 2-7 in the Big South.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs most recently went 2-1 in a series against SoCon foe, VMI in Boiling Springs, N.C., this past weekend.
Devin Pressley is leading the Big South with four saves on the mound this season, while Connor Maggi stands out with 42 strikeouts.
Humberto Torres paces the squad with 26 runs.
Peter Capobianco stands out with 22 RBI, while Tommy Tavarez leads with 31 hits.
Tavarez and Capobianco lead Gardner-Webb with seven homers apiece this season.
Gardner-Webb was picked to finish second in the 2024 Big South Baseball Preseason Poll.
The overall series between Gardner-Webb and UNCG is just about neck-and-neck with the Runnin’ Bulldogs leading by one win at 4-3. The Spartans and Runnin Bulldogs were scheduled to play earlier this season in Boiling Springs. However, the game was cancelled due to inclement weather. The last time the two teams met was in the 2023 season in Greensboro, with Gardner-Webb coming away with the 9-3 win.
