Offense Leads UNCG Softball Past NC A&T in 9-1 Win

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team hit past cross-town rival North Carolina A&T on Wednesday, April 10 in a non-conference five-inning 9-1 victory at the UNCG Softball Stadium.

NC A&T scored the first run of the game as Alyxx Estrada led the game off with a double to right center and Joey Barkhimer drove her in on a single through the left side, 1-0.

The Spartans responded with five runs on four hits in the bottom of the first for a 5-1 advantage. Jessie Shipley led off with a triple to left center and was followed by a walk from Brooklynn Maxwell. Grace Loftin drove in both on a single through the left side for the lead, 2-1. Meredith Harwood added another run to the lead with her RBI single. With two outs and the bases loaded, Tori Dalehite connected on a 1-2 pitch scoring two more runs for a 5-1 lead.

UNCG put up another run in the bottom of the second, as Jorde Chartrand hit a sacrifice fly for a 6-1 advantage. Then in the bottom of the third with one out and Betsy Eatmon on second, Tori Dalehite crushed her fourth home run over the left center wall putting UNCG up 8-1.

In the circle, Chartrand retired nine-straight batters from the top of the first to the top of the fourth inning. The Aggies stranded two base runners in the top of the fourth before the Spartans had Rylie Williams triple to left field scoring Anna White for the ninth run of the game in the bottom half of the frame, 9-1.

NC A&T saw Estrada walk in the top of the ninth, but UNCG retired the side with a strikeout and a fly out to secure the five-inning win.

The Spartans continue a six-game home stand this weekend hosting The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Chattanooga for three games. UNCG and the Mocs will open the series on Saturday, April 13 with a doubleheader and a first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
