UNCG Baseball Falls in Extra Innings at Western Carolina

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team fell 7-6 in 10 innings against the Western Carolina Catamounts in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action on Sunday afternoon at Ronnie G. Childress Field at Hennon Stadium.

Despite falling in the series finale, the Spartans ensured a series victory over the Catamounts by winning games one and two on Friday and Saturday.

The Spartans remain third in the SoCon with a 7-5 record in conference play. UNCG has won three of its four SoCon series so far this season.

For the first time in the weekend series, the Catamounts struck first when Nate Stocum hit a solo home run down the right-field line in the bottom of the first inning. However, the Spartans quickly answered with one of their own in the top half of the second from

Mitchell Smith
, who blasted it out to center as UNCG’s leadoff hitter.

WCU reclaimed a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning when Mason Holton doubled to left to score a pair.

In the fifth frame, UNCG clawed its way back and grabbed its first lead. It started with
Zachary Walsh
scoring on a wild pitch and then featured an RBI double down the left-field line from
Jeremy Wolf
Aidan Brewer
gave the Spartans their first lead with an RBI single up the middle and later scored on a throwing error to make it 5-3.

The sixth inning saw WCU reclaim a 6-5 lead with a pair of home runs, first a solo shot down the line in right from Zach Ketterman before Kyle Harbison plated a pair with a two-run home run to left-center.

GC Jarman
tied the game for the Spartans in the top of the eighth on a double to left-center that drove in
Caleb Cozart
from second. Still tied 6-6 through nine frames, Sunday’s ballgame called for extra innings to determine a winner.

In the bottom of the 10th, Jack Spyke entered the game to pinch hit and led off the inning with a single. After advancing to second on a ground out and to third on a single, he scored the game-winning run on a single through the right side hit by Ketterman.

The Catamounts’ victory snapped UNCG’s streak of five straight wins against WCU dating back to March 24, 2023.
Rob Ready was the Spartans starting arm on Sunday. He threw 5.2 innings allowing six runs on nine hits while striking out two and walking a pair.
Brandon Hudson pitched three shutout innings in relief of Ready for the Spartans. He allowed one hit and struck out two along the way.
Brewer, Cozart, Jarman, Smith and Wolf each recorded one RBI for UNCG.
Jarman led the Spartans with a three-hit afternoon, which included a pair of doubles in five at bats.
