UNCG Softball to Face No. 3 Duke Wednesday

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team continues a six-game home streak, hosting No. 3 Duke for one non-conference game on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. at the UNCG Softball Stadium.

The Spartans are currently 25-19 overall and 7-5 in The Southern Conference (SoCon), while the Blue Devils are 37-4 overall and 16-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

UNCG is coming off three-game weekend series against SoCon foe Chattanooga at UNCG Softball Stadium, where the Spartans fell 6-3 and 6-5 in nine innings during a doubleheader on Saturday before winning 5-4 in Sunday’s finale.
Brooklynn Maxwell recorded her 200th career hit with a pair of singles in UNCG’s 5-4 victory on Sunday. She is now riding a five-game hitting streak with nine hits in her last eight games.
Maddie Spell pitched 8.2 innings in the circle over the weekend, allowing just three runs while striking out eight and only walking three.
Reese Byrd tossed 5.1 innings for the Spartans between games one and three and allowed just one run while retiring a pair on strikes.

Maxwell is pacing the Spartans with a .419 batting average, 36 RBI, and 13 home runs.
Grace Loftin is second on the team with 29 RBI and 11 homers, while Tori Dalehite is second with a .351 batting average.
Maxwell is pacing the SoCon in batting average, runs scored, hits, triples, at bats, and assists.
Maxwell is ranked nationally in the top 15 in three categories: fifth in total bases (123) and tied for ninth in triples (5) and hits (62).
Jessie Shipley is tied for 38th in the nation with 13 doubles.
The Spartans are in the top 50 nationally in four categories: seventh in walks (177), 13th in home runs per game (1.41), 39th in slugging percentage (0.488), and 50th in double plays per game (0.41).
Salem Ward is pacing the Spartans’ pitching staff with 54 strikeouts in 67.1 innings of work.
Maddie Spell is second on the team with 48 strikeouts in 77.2 innings.
Rhyann Jones is third on the team with 45 strikeouts in 85.0 innings.
Spell was named SoCon Pitcher of the Week (Feb. 26), while Anna White was named SoCon Player of the Week (Feb. 26).
On March 11, Brooklynn Maxwell was named SoCon Player of the Week and Salem Ward was tabbed SoCon Pitcher of the Week.
Maxwell was also named SoCon Player of the Month for all competition during the month of February and March.


Duke finished the 2023 softball season with a 48-12 overall mark and a 19-5 record in the ACC.
The Blue Devils were voted to finish in a tie for second in the 2024 ACC Softball Preseason Coaches’ Poll.
Ana Gold (infield), Aminah Vega (infield), D’Auna Jennings (outfield), and Cassidy Curd (pitcher) were all named to the Preseason All-ACC Team.
Duke leads the ACC in earned run average (1.49), fielding percentage (.975), shutouts (5), strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.76), and win-loss percentage (.902).
In the nation, Duke is ranked second in earned run average (1.49) and win-loss percentage (.902), fifth in shutouts (5), as well as eighth in scoring (7.12) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.76).
Curd ranks sixth in the nation and paces the ACC in hits allowed per seven innings (3.81). Additionally, she leads the ACC and stands at 13th in the nation for ERA (1.27) and third in strikeouts per seven innings (11.1).
Claire Davidson ranks third in the ACC and 12th in the nation with a .455 batting average. She is also third in the ACC and 14th in the country for home runs (15) while sitting at second in the conference and seventh in the NCAA with a .562 on-base percentage. Lastly, she paces the ACC with an average of 1.37 RBI per game and is second in the conference and 11th in the country for runs scored per game (1.17).
Vega leads the ACC and ranks 12th in the nation for doubles (15) and 27th in doubles per game (0.37).

The Spartans head to Cullowhee, N.C., following the midweek test to take on Western Carolina at Catamount Softball Complex. The three-game SoCon series begins Saturday, April 20 with doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. and concludes with the finale on Sunday, April 21 at 1:00 p.m.
