No. 3 Duke Takes Down UNCG Softball

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team fell to No. 3 Duke on Wednesday night at the UNCG Softball Stadium in a non-conference five-inning game, 16-3.

The Blue Devils scored first in the top of the first with a solo home run from Kelly Torres for a 1-0 advantage.

The Spartans responded with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the frame for a 2-1 lead. Brooklynn Maxwell led off with a double to left center and Jessie Shipley put runners on the corners with a bunt single. Grace Loftin followed with a double to right center that scored both Maxwell and Shipley with no outs. Duke retired three-straight to retire the side.

The Blue Devils broke open the game with 10 runs on seven hits and one error for a nine-run lead in the top of the second, 11-2. Duke continued to chip away and scored three more runs in the top of the third for a 14-2 score.

Both teams were scoreless in the fourth, before the Blue Devils added two runs to their tally in the top of the fifth, 16-2. In the bottom of the fifth, UNCG’s Maycin Brown took a 3-2 count and hammered a ball over the center field wall for her second homer of the season, 16-3. Duke retired the side to hold on for the win.


Five different Spartans accounted for their five hits.
Loftin went 1-for-2 with two RBI.
Brown tallied the Spartans’ 63rd home run of the season.

The Spartans are set to hit the road for a three-game series against The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Western Carolina. The games are currently scheduled for Saturday with the doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. and a single game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at the Catamount Softball Complex.
