UNCG Baseball Claims Series against Radford with Doubleheader Sweep

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team claimed the series against Radford after earning two wins 9-6 and 17-1 (7 innings) in a doubleheader on Saturday at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

Game 1: UNCG 9 – RADFORD 6
Radford started off heavy on offense, recording four runs on four hits in the top of the first (4-0). However, Rob Ready was able to leave the bases loaded after throwing his only strikeout of the game.

Jake Ogden put the Spartans on the board in the bottom half of the first with a solo home run, his third of the season (4-1).

The Highlanders held the 4-1 lead until UNCG was able to take a 6-4 advantage after recording five runs in the sixth. First, Caleb Cozart singled through the left side to score Aidan Brewer (4-2). The Spartans scored their next run when Mitchell Smith received a HBP with bases loaded to force Ogden home (4-3). UNCG added two more runs when Luke Holland bunted, allowing GC Jarman and Cozart to score on a fielding error from Radford’s pitcher. The Spartans added their final run of the inning when Luke Jenkins singled through the left side on his first pitch, bringing in Mitchell Smith (6-4).

Radford was able to record one run in the top of the seventh, bringing its deficit back to one (6-5).

Caleb Cozart added another run for the Spartans in the bottom of the seventh after Trey Truitt singled to right field on his first pitch received for the 7-5 lead.

The Highlanders tacked on another run in the eighth inning, pulling back within one (7-6).

UNCG added the final two runs of the game in the eighth inning. First, Ogden tripled to left center with the ball bouncing off the top of wall to send Jeremy Wolf home from third. Later on, Ogden secured another run when Jarman singled through the right side (9-6).

Danny Thompson Jr. secured the 9-6 win for the Spartans on the mound to close out the top of the ninth inning.

NOTES
Four Spartans recorded two hits apiece.
Ogden led the Spartans with three runs and two RBI.
Wolf was the only player to record two doubles in the game.
Smith paced the Spartans on the field with 10 putouts.
UNCG recorded 13 hits to Radford’s eight.
Chapman led the Spartans on the mound with five strikeouts.
Thompson Jr. followed closely behind with four strikeouts.

Game 2: UNCG 17 – RADFORD 1 (7 innings)
The Spartans took the early offensive advantage in game two with one run in the first inning and six in the second. Ogden scored the first run of the game when Jarman grounded out to second base (1-0).

UNCG’s six-run second inning was started off when Trey ran home on a groundout by Jacob Dilley (2-0). Brewer launched his seventh homer of the season, going to right field for three RBI, giving the Spartans the 5-0 advantage. The final runs of the inning came when Smith doubled to left center for two RBI (7-0).

The Spartans tallied another run in the fourth inning when Jarman singled through the right side to bring in Ogden from third (8-0).

Radford got on the board with its only run in the sixth inning, cutting its margin to seven (8-1).

The Blue & Gold responded with a staggering nine runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning. First, Smith doubled down the third base line for two RBI (10-1). Jacob Budzik’s sacrifice fly then scored Jarman (11-1). In the next at bat, Zachary Walsh reached first base on a fielding error, while Smith ran home for the 12-1 lead. Later on, with bases loaded, Ogden walked to first base to push Walsh home from third (13-1). Next in the lineup, Cozart singled to right center for three RBI (16-1). The final run of the day came when Smith singled through the left side to bring in Cozart for the 17-1 victory.

Smith paced the squad on the field with seven putouts, while Ogden led with three assists.
Jay Miller led UNCG on the mound with four strikeouts in his 6.0 innings of action.
