UNCG Softball Hosts In-State Foe Charlotte for Mid-Week Battle
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team looks to conclude its home regular season slate this week with four games, the first being against in-state foe Charlotte on Wednesday, April 24 with a first pitch at 6:00 p.m. at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
The Spartans are currently 27-21 overall and 9-6 in the SoCon while the 49ers are 29-16 overall and 15-6 in the American.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
The Spartans are coming off a 2-1 series over SoCon foe Western Carolina this past weekend in Cullowhee.
UNCG took the first two games with scores of 6-1 and 6-5 in eight innings, while the Catamounts won game three 13-5 in five innings.
Jorde Chartrand earned her fifth win of the season during game one with a season-best six strikeouts.
Also in that game, the Spartans tallied 12 hits and it was the 10th game this season with 10 or more hits.
In the extra-inning victory, Grace Loftin hit the eventual game-winning hit in the top of the eighth.
Maycin Brown hit home runs in two of the three games this weekend.
RUNDOWN ON THE SPARTANS
Brooklynn Maxwell is pacing the Spartans with a .398 batting average, 37 RBI, and 14 home runs.
Loftin is second on the team with 33 RBI and 12 homers, while Jessie Shipley is second with a .336 batting average.
Maxwell is pacing the SoCon in batting average, runs scored, hits, triples, at bats, and assists.
Maxwell is ranked nationally in the top 20 in three categories: fifth in total bases (129), 14th in triples, and 18th in hits.
Maxwell and Shipley each lead the team with 13 doubles this season.
Loftin is 28th nationally in walks per game (0.73).
The Spartans are in the top 50 nationally in four categories: 8th in walks (186), 12th in home runs per game (1.40), 33rd in slugging percentage (0.492), and 45th in doubles (64).
Salem Ward is pacing the Spartans’ pitching staff with 57 strikeouts in 72.1 innings of work with a 2.71 ERA.
Maddie Spell is second on the team with 49 strikeouts in 79.0 innings.
Rhyann Jones is third on the team with 46 strikeouts in 89.2 innings.
Spell was named SoCon Pitcher of the Week (Feb. 26), while Anna White was named SoCon Player of the Week (Feb. 26).
On March 11, Brooklynn Maxwell was named SoCon Player of the Week and Salem Ward was tabbed SoCon Pitcher of the Week.
Maxwell was also named SoCon Player of the Month for all competition during the month of February and March.
Most recently, Brown was tabbed SoCon Player of the Week, bringing UNCG’s total to three recognitions this season.
RUNDOWN ON THE 49ERS
Charlotte ended 2023 with a 35-23 overall record and a 16-7 mark in Conference USA.
The 49ers earned their first NCAA Tournament bid last season and won their first game in program history.
This the 49ers first season in the American Conference.
The 49ers were voted to finish second in the American Preseason Poll.
Sam Gress was named to D1 Softball Preseason Top 100 List, while Gress and Ella Chancey earned Preseason Softball America Honors.
Charlotte will be coming to Greensboro on a seven-game win streak.
The 49ers are nationally ranked 10th in walks (185) and 32nd in doubles (66).
Arianna Rodi is eighth nationally with 17 home runs and 10th with 0.38 home runs per game.
Lexi Winters is 17th nationally in toughest to strikeout (31.3).
Chancey (.315) and Rodi (.356) are leading the 49ers in batting average, while Rodi has dominated with 41 RBI this season.
In the circle, Georgeanna Barefoot has tossed 118.0 innings and has struck out 73 batters.
Gress is second on the staff with 83.2 innings thrown and 60 strikeouts.

The Spartans will conclude their regular season home slate this weekend, hosting SoCon foe Mercer for a three-game series on Saturday, April 27 with a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. and Sunday, April 28 with the single game scheduled for 1:00 p.m. This weekend will be senior recognition weekend as well as Alumni Weekend for softball.
Prior to Saturday’s doubleheader, the Spartans’ seniors will catch a first pitch from their dads. Senior alumni will also get recognized in between games. The first 100 fans will receive a FREE hat!
On Sunday before the game, UNCG will recognize its seven seniors.
