GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team resumes The Southern Conference (SoCon) action this weekend hosting the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) Keydets into the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS

UNCG is coming off a midweek non-conference victory 13-0 in seven innings over High Point. The Spartans scored in every inning aside from the first and the sixth, plating four in the second and three in the third, fourth and fifth frames.
Sammy Tortorella pitched a complete-game shutout with a career-high eight strikeouts.
Caleb Cozart hit his 18th home run of the year to break UNCG’s single-season record.
Aidan Brewer hit his third grand slam of the season in the second inning to open the scoring and paced the Spartans with four RBI.
Cozart, Mitchell Smith and Zachary Walsh each finished with two RBI.
GC Jarman led UNCG with three walks.
Eight of the Spartans’ 10 batters recorded a hit in the game.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS

UNCG enters the weekend with a 23-16 overall record and 7-5 SoCon record for third in the conference standings.
Over its last 10 games, UNCG has totaled 112 runs while only allowing 52.
Additionally, the Spartans have scored 10 or more runs in six of their last nine games played.
As a team, UNCG is ranked in the top-30 nationally over three categories, including 16th in sacrifice bunts (31), 19th in stolen bases (84) and 18th in stolen bases per game (2.15).
Cozart paces the SoCon and ranks among the best in the country in several offensive categories, including home runs (18, 11th in NCAA), HR per game (0.47, 12th in NCAA), RBI (62, 6th in NCAA), RBI per game (1.63, 4th in NCAA) and slugging percentage (.796, 25th in NCAA).
Jeremy Wolf and Jarman have played a large part in the Spartans’ sacrifice bunting efforts. They are tied for second in the conference with eight sacrifice bunts (20th in NCAA) and lead the SoCon with an average of 0.24 sac bunts per game (17th in NCAA).
Smith is tied for first in the SoCon with 14 doubles.
Rob Ready was named the SoCon Pitcher of the Week after the team’s SoCon opening series win against Mercer (March 22-24) when he threw for a complete game with a career-high nine strikeouts in game two against the Bears. He ranks 24th in the nation and is tied for the top spot in the SoCon with 10 starts so far this season.
Cozart was named the SoCon Player of the Week and the Perfect Game Player of the Week after hitting four home runs in the season-opening series against Fairfield (Feb. 16-18).
Julien Peissel was selected as the SoCon Pitcher of the Week after starting on the mound in UNCG’s win over No. 1 Wake Forest (Feb. 20). Peissel is leading the team with 41 strikeouts.
Ready was named to the Preseason All-SoCon Second Team.
UNCG was tabbed to finish sixth in the 2024 SoCon Preseason Coaches’ Poll after finishing the 2023 season with a 25-34 overall record and 9-12 mark in SoCon play.
UNCG concluded last season in the semifinal round of the SoCon Tournament, falling to No. 1 Samford, 9-5.
The Spartans have 22 newcomers for the 2024 season: 10 transfers and 12 freshmen.
Eighteen Spartans have returned from last season for UNCG.

SCOUTING THE KEYDETS

VMI is 24-20 this season and owns a 6-6 mark in the SoCon for a three-way tie for fourth in the conference standings.
The Keydets are coming off a 14-5 victory over William & Mary on the road Tuesday night. Prior to that, they took two out of three from The Citadel over the weekend, falling 7-1 on Friday before winning 10-2 on Saturday and 6-5 in 10 innings on Sunday.
VMI leads the country in stolen bases (145) and stolen bases per game (3.30).
The Keydets also lead the SoCon and are top-20 in the nation in walks (242, 14th in NCAA), sacrifice bunts (35, 10th in NCAA), sacrifice flies (27, 11th in NCAA) and walks allowed per nine innings (3.37, 15th in NCAA).
VMI is led by Justin Starke offensively, who paces the Keydets with a .385 batting average, 1.186 OPS, 53 runs, 60 hits, .667 slugging percentage, 39 walks and a .519 on-base percentage.
Grayson Fitzwater leads VMI in home runs (14), RBI (53) and total bases (107).

SERIES HISTORY VS THE KEYDETS
UNCG is 34-21 in the all-time series against VMI, which dates back to the first meeting on May 2, 1992, where the Spartans won 6-5 at home. However, last season’s series saw the Keydets best the Spartans two times in a three-game series at VMI.
