Cozart Collects Second SoCon Player of the Week Honor
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team’s senior Caleb Cozart has been named The Southern Conference (SoCon) Baseball Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
Cozart led the Spartans to a 13-0 win over High Point before helping UNCG earn its first SoCon series sweep of the season, besting the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in a three-game series over the weekend.
“This weekend was a big weekend for the team, we swept a solid VMI team to set ourselves in striking of first place,” Cozart said. “I just did my part to help the team, being moved to the No. 2 spot in the lineup was a shock, but I liked it.”
The High Point, N.C., native was 6-for-9 (.667) in four games throughout the week. Most notably, Cozart broke UNCG’s record for home runs in a season when he hit a two-run homer out to right for his 18th blast of the season on Wednesday against High Point. He finished the week with three home runs for 20 on the season, which leads the SoCon and ranks ninth in the country.
Additionally, Cozart drove in six runs and scored eight of his own while totaling 16 bases throughout the week. With 66 RBI now this season, he stands at fourth in the country for RBI per game (1.61).
Monday marked UNCG’s fourth SoCon Baseball Player of the Week this season as well as Cozart’s second time earning it in his career after previously being named on Feb. 19. The last time a Spartan earned a weekly honor was on March 25, when Rob Ready earned SoCon Pitcher of the Week. Julien Peissel was also named SoCon Pitcher of the Week this season on Feb. 26.
