UNCG Softball Comes from Behind to Defeat Wofford, 5-4

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team bounced back to take game three against the Wofford Terriers, 5-4, on Saturday afternoon at Hope Field in The Southern Conference (SoCon) regular season series finale.

Wofford capitalized on a four-hit inning, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first for a 4-0 lead.

Both teams were scoreless in the second inning, but UNCG scored at least one run in each of the next three frames.

In the top of the third, Tori Dalehite led off the inning with a walk and Maycin Brown singled to left field. With runners on the corners, Betsy Eatmon crushed her eighth home run of the season and third in the weekend to cut the deficit to one, 4-3.

The Spartans tied the game in the top of the fourth as Jessie Shipley hit a one-out double to center field and Meredith Harwood singled up the middle, 4-4.

UNCG got out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the fourth and took its first lead in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Jorde Chartrand singled to center field and Blayke Batten followed with a triple to left field for the go-ahead run, 5-4.

Wofford threatened with base runners in both the sixth and seventh innings, but the Spartans’ defense prevailed to hold on for the win.

NOTES

Betsy Eatmon went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a home run.
UNCG’s seven other hits were spread among seven Spartans.
Reese Byrd tossed 6.1 innings giving up eight hits for her fourth win of the season.
